Daily Photo: Baby Birds

Giuseppe and Mr. Sunshine watch a confused baby wren on the front porch.

I think every single bird in the yard had a second nest this year. Baby birds have been peeping and squawking all day long! All the cats are exhausted at running to see what the deal is when one of them starts up. From the corner of my eye I saw two black cat butts and tails around the corner of the table by the door. This baby wren was standing right there in the middle of the porch peeping while its parents were over in the spruce, hysterical. The baby wren was clueless, turning its head around with big eyes like, “Wow look at all this stuff, how did I get here and why are my parents yelling at me?” Seeing two agents of death at the door, parent wrens stay where they are.

In the lilac at the side window, about 400 chickadees are cheeping, rapid-fire parents to higher-pitched babies, as the little ones learn from exhausted parents who repeatedly hop from the branch to the perch on the feeder, reach in a pull out a seed, hop back to the branch and knock the seed open to eat the prize inside. Little ones watch, fascinated, and ask to be fed. Parents repeat.

Cardinals are parasailing back and forth across the back yard yelling back to their children “chip! chip! chip” as they fly and “birdie! birdie! birdie!” when they land. Little brownish cardinals shuffle back and forth on their branch. Parents repeat.

These situations happen each day and can go on for hours. Cats nap. Parents repeat.

Still can’t remember where it’s bound.

What other photos did I feature around this date?

Subtle

A black cat in a room darkened to block the hot summer sun; Mimi still catches enough light to definition of her petite features. I love it when the sun shines through their ears turning them pink or coral or even red.
