Daily Photo: Afternoon Reflections

three black cats on bed
Afternoon Reflections

Because the three each look reflective as they lie upon each other on the bed, and they are reflection in the headboard; it was a reflective afternoon.

This afternoon I met for several hours with a client on the other side of the city, and when I came home only Mimi and Giuseppe were there to greet me; this was where Mewsette, Bean and Sunshine were. Last week after a similar errand with the same client it was two of them, Mewsette and Sunshine, in a very similar pose, another equally challenging photo of sable cats against deep cherry mahogany headboard, basically the same color.

We meet again next week, perhaps I will come home to all of them together, something like this or even only four.

…One cannot gaze upon a sleeping cat and remain tense…

Yes, black cats are difficult to photograph..one loses the definition of depth when taking a photo of their faces. A photographer friend had this suggestion to help her when she had photo shoots with black cats. Take an eye shadow brush and some white eye shadow and lightly powder on either side of the bridge of their nose. It gives the effect of depth and defines the area when taking a photo.

Teri, I’d have an eye shadow brush that had become a cat toy…what I use is white and light backgrounds, like the bedspread, which is what works here, and all the white walls in the bathroom. I also have pieces of white fome-core and matboard all over the house to use as reflectors. But the best thing is an f1.8 lens and a moderately fast shutter speed. My 18-55 lense only goes to f4.0. I’m so glad they are accustomed to being photographed–I walked all around the bed, stepping on boxes, and they barely blinked. Professional cat models–surely you know how that is!
