Commissioned Portrait: Uncle Benton and Eno

Uncle Benton, longtime college professor and lover of eclectic music, and his cat, Eno, named for Brian Eno and his ambient compositions.

I never met Uncle Benton or Eno, but I was commissioned to paint their portrait by his niece from one of her photos of him and Eno taken a few years previous.

Sadly, Uncle Benton had developed dementia and was moving to a care facility, and a family member would take Eno. His niece wanted the portrait for him because he also liked art and she thought he might notice a painting more than a photo, he’d find it more interesting because it was a painting, and she hoped that seeing himself and Eno together would help to keep his mind fresh for as long as possible. I thought this was an absolutely sweet thing to do, having watched my father drift into dementia 15 years prior.

She came to my house to deliver the photo and, seeing other paintings on my walls, liked a looser and more impressionist style, and decided she wanted Uncle Benton’s painting done that way. I was happy for that opportunity. I never heard from her again after that, but I do hope Uncle Benton and Eno both had many more good years.

The top one is closer to the dimension of the finished painting I recorded, but I can’t see nipping off Eno’s toes, and I knew I remembered seeing his full hand holding Eno. So I have them both. This is still from the era of film photography for my portraits rather than scanning, and the photos are a little soft and even have two different tones, but put them together to imagine the final portrait.

That background is truly pretty wild. It was the style at the time, and I unintentionally carried it farther than the usual, but when I looked at it later, and now, I see a landscape in the background, and clouds parting in the sky, and evening, and all that would have been one of my favorite Impressionist subjects. Maybe all those landscapes did have an influence on me.

The certificate itself is 8.5″ x 11″ and features a collage of portrait images with the recipient’s and giver’s names, printed on parchment cover stock. The whole thing is packaged in a pocket folder and includes a brochure, a letter from me to the recipient and several business cards. The certificate package can be easily mailed or wrapped as a gift and shipped directly to your recipient.

I can also make it downloadable if you’re in a hurry.

Certificates are good for up to one year after issue.

You can purchase gift certificates here or from Portraits of Animals if you are also purchasing other animal-inspired merchandise.
