Cats for Adoption: Gizmo

Gizmo
Gizmo

A little scruffy maybe, big jowls, what’s Gizmo’s story? He’s a purrfect gentleman with a large vocabulary of mews and chirps, and he loves the people who rescued him.

When we set traps to capture cats in need, we have typically talked to someone in the area and have an idea of how many cats there are, what they look like, where they eat, and maybe a little bit of the story of how they came to live out on the streets. Sometimes, however, we see more kitties than we knew were there, and we’ll often trap a kitty we know nothing about. Asking around the neighborhood we’ll hear, “Oh, yeah, that cat…” and find out the story.

Gizmo is a really nice kitty who’s trying to figure out how his good deal went wrong. He needs some medical care before he can be adopted, but you can help Gizmo even if you’re not interested in adopting.

Gizmo’s story…

While we were out trying to trap a feral so we could spay her, we caught this precious boy. It was brought to our attention that he was tossed out like garbage by his owners when they moved. Thanks to them, he got FIV, fleas, ticks, worms, a terrible URI, and was clearly not given any veterinary care.

Gizmo is starting a new antibiotic to help clear up his URI so he can get healthy and then receive surgery to remove a dead canine tooth. He will also get blood work done and get neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. His total cost of care will be $400+. This is a cost outside the scope of what our adoption fee would help pay for. If you’d like to donate to his care, you can PayPal us at [email protected] OR message us for a mailing address for a check. Thank you from Gizmo!

Adopting from Pittsburgh C.A.T.

Gizmo obviously won’t be ready to adopt for a few weeks at least, but if you can’t wait to meet him all Pittsburgh C.A.T. adoptions begin with our application. After it’s reviewed you’ll be contacted about meeting your cat or kitten. All cats have been fostered in homes and are healthy, spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccines.

Also look for more adoptable cats on Pittsburgh C.A.T.’s Petfinder page.

Amazon Wish Lists

The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs. Pittsburgh CAT has a number of wish lists that include foods for feeding neo-natal kittens like KMR, and other lists that include the best kitten foods, adult cat foods, food and materials for feral cats, and preferred toys and litter.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.

Art With Donation from Portraits of Animals!

“Kennedy”, white and black charcoal on gray toned paper, 5″ x 8″ © Bernadette E. Kazmarski

I fostered Kennedy for the last six weeks of his time in this life, and each day was a joy. If it hadn’t been for an organized group of rescuers Kennedy would never have found his way to my home. He would never have been rescued, and I would never have known him and been able to share him with you. I created this sketch to help cover the costs of his care. I auctioned it off, and encouraged people to donate at least $25.00 and I would send them a print of the sketch. Now $5.00 from each sale goes to benefit the cat rescue I work with, Pittsburgh CAT, or to the Homeless Cat Management Team to help spay and neuter more cats so there won’t be so many to rescue.

Read more about Kennedy and purchase a print of this sketch.
