A Feather in Mimi’s Bird Bath

A feather floating in Mimi’s bird bath.

Tuesday morning as I began my memory walk in the garden I glanced at Mimi’s bird bath and saw a small gray feather floating there, right in the center. Oh, Mimi, I love you so much, thank you for sending me another sign of your spirit. And a feather! Of all messages, a small gray dove feather, how symbolic, a true messenger, and a message of peace and gentleness. The fact it was in Mimi’s bird bath makes me think she simply visited it for a drink as she had done on so many mornings. And her angel left a note for me to let me know she was there.

Or was she actually still around? I noticed he water level was low, I’d been lax in cleaning and refilling since Saturday when I’d always kept it spotless for her. I decided that feather needed to float in water Mimi would want to drink and hastened to fill a watering can and swipe the bottom and refill it, letting the feather float on the surface in her honor.

That feather floated right in the center for as long as I lingered there and remembered Mimi in the garden in those last days. I knew she was losing energy, but she loved her life and enjoyed as much as she could every day before she decided to head up to the deck for her nap. How could her spirit not remain here?

Magical

I didn’t get a good video that day but I’m glad the feather remained in the bird bath, though days were overcast. I decided this morning during a break in the clouds to get that video again. Here it is, linked from Dropbox for now—it’s a full 1:29 and you don’t need to watch the whole thing! I will probably edit it and change this to a YouTube link when I get the chance to edit it more.

I’ll have other magic to share too, and some fun, and some memories, like the butterfly that appeared to me on the same day, and more.

Pet Loss in the First Person

From the time I began writing about my experiences in pet loss, relating what I was feeling and thinking about it as I moved through grief, readers have thanked me, often in private, for my honesty, grateful to know another shared their feelings as they moved through grief, or helped them make a decision.

Thank you for following our grief journey after losing three members of our feline family.

I hope sharing our experiences have helped you in some way, as sharing my experiences with you helps me.

You can read all the articles related to their loss by tapping one of these images in the side bar and in articles.

    • Thank you for visiting and reading about Mimi.

  • I would love to see these heartfelt and inspirational stories become a book.

    • Thanks, Mollie. It can become volume 2, following “Little Visits” which I anthologized my stories of cats I’d lost up to 1999 and their visits to me–and to my other cats. I never published it as a book, when I shared it I never saw enough interest to go to the time and expense, neither of which I had then or really since then. We’ll see what I can do now. • Did you hear that Mimi? Say HI to a few kitties for our friends! As soon as you can untangle yourself from your children, of course.

    • I’m just going to say that Mimi has been busy communicating. Like the lights on the deck getting into my lap, this feather in the center of her birdbath us just too clear!
