Vintage Photo: Pussy Willow, 1999

Pussy Willow
Pussy Willow

I’m pretty sure this is from 1999, just looking at the arrangement of things, and I’m pretty sure it was from November, or at least late autumn, because of the angle and brightness of the sun. The pussy willow wasn’t fresh; I had cut it probably a few years before but kept it for decoration after it had dried, and somehow balanced it in that vertical vase. I liked the organic, Oriental feel of it. Then Namir came and sat next to it in the sun but appearing only in parts, as if a magician had hidden parts of him, not looking at me, posing purrfectly for what would seem a candid shot. I sold this as a framed print for years, just a small interesting scene. Below it’s in black and white, and while I love the clarity and directness in black and white, it’s the warm sun I like best.

A Sunny Room

This photograph was taken in 1983, when I first got my camera and began photographing with black and white film. Kublai, the kitty who rescued me in college and truly began my life as an animal artist, was only about two years old. Read more, and purchase.

  • This one was actually my neighbor’s, right on the property line, but most of it was in my yard. I loved it and grew up with one. This one lived a good long life and died back completely several years ago, then in a heavy rain slipped its roots out of the soil and fell against my deck roof. I have to plant another somewhere in the yard. If you search this site for “pussy willow” you’ll see many photos of it with snow and without.

  • You’ve just reminded me that I want to add a pussy willow to our yard, along with a witch hazel plant. I mean, c’mon now! A plant named after my feline friends?!? GOT to have one!
