Want a Good Deal on a Used Cat?

We do many things together.

“Cats are like potato chips, it’s hard to have just one.”

Years ago, a friend of mine had a refrigerator magnet that read that phrase, and it still makes me laugh, and it’s still true.

More cats are owned as pets than any other pet—73 million as opposed to 68 million dogs—and I think it’s partly because of what I discovered. I had six cats plus fosters at the time, and there always seemed to be room for one more.

And unfortunately, there always seemed to be a big supply of cats to fill the need.

Right now, in the middle of “kitten season” when shelters are overflowing with unexpected and unintended litters of kittens, it’s time to help take the burden off of shelters and foster families who have taken in cats and kittens to foster, so if you have room help to celebrate Adopt a Cat Month.

Read more about Adopt A Cat Month, co-sponsored by the Catalyst Council website, dedicated to helping the country’s most popular pet get the respect and health care they deserve, and American Humane, protecting children and animals since 1877.

Locally, Animal Friends is offering an adoption deal between June 1 and June 30: adopt a cat for just $20.10! Animal Friends is a no-kill shelter, so adopting cats from them will open up more cage space for more cats.

The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society and Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania also have adoption deals and plenty of cats for adoption.

And all the foster families in of FosterCat would love to see their foster kitties in new homes and then be able to help other homeless kitties!

In addition, our friend Ingrid King of The Conscious Cat is asking for your adoption stories, and at the end of June the most touching story will win an autographed copy of Buckley’s Story!

So if you’re not already overflowing with kitty love, fill that spot with a homeless kitty!

  • Marg, when shelters are overpopulated with cats, no-kill can often work against them. When the no-kill shelter is full it has to stop taking cats, but they have to go somewhere. The open-door shelters really do the best they can with foster homes and outreach, and they bear the brunt of kitten season. I actually support my local no-kill shelters as often as possible so that they can find homes for as many cats as possible, and when I had room I’d foster a few adults during kitten season; so did many others. I know you don’t have the room, but I always try to tell others to consider temporarily fostering adult cats until autumn.

  • That first picture is the best with all those black kittens lined up together. Hopefully some cats and or kittens will get adopted into some permanent homes. All we can do is to keep trying. I sure wish I could take some more but I think there would be mutiny here if I did.
I need to check around here to see if there are any adoption fee deals. We don’t have a No-kill shelter in the town where I live which is very sad.
    Have a great week end.

  • Ingrid, it’s so hard to believe that we are still struggling with this after all these years of trying to increase spay and neuter for cats! I think anything we do helps to raise awareness and respect for cats, one person at a time, and hopefully we’ll find a few good homes too. I can’t wait to read the stories on your blog post, though to be honest in all my life with cats I have never intentionally adopted a cat, aside from Bootsie who was a replacement for a gift kitten who died and I don’t want to relate a sad story. Let’s hope for the best this June!

  • Thanks for linking to my call for adoption stories, Bernadette. I hope Adopt-a-Cat month will be hugely successful and lots of kitties will find their forever homes. Sometimes, it seems overwhelming – there’s so much need out there – but we have to remind ourselves that if we save even one, we’ve made a difference.

  • Tamar, Kip seems like a real hoot, and I think he knew who to choose! Petie seems like he’s holding out for something, though, like maybe you’ll get rid of Kip and then he’ll get rid of his little attitude. I think they both picked you because they know you’d understand them!

  • I wish I had exciting adoption stories to share. I think they are pretty ordinary except that Kip tricked me and I was basically guilted/forced into adopting Petie.

KIP: I had it in my head i wanted a grey male tabby and Kip seemed to fit the bill. He’d been someone’s pet before but the details were very vague. He seemed like a lump in his cage. Depressed and mellow cat is what came to mind. Good I thought since I needed some cuddling feeling blue myself. But ohhhh no. the MOMENT i got home and opened the cage Kip was zipping around like a bat out of hell and basically hasn’t stopped yet though he has slowed down a bit 5 years later around the ripe age of approx 10 years old. Every night when I would come home from work, exhausted, Kip would run behind the ottoman waiting for me to throw mice for him to chase after.

PETIE: I was running into Petco to buy litter for Kip and though I kept telling myself NOT to look at the cats up for adoption. But of course, I couldn’t help myself. PLUS I HAD been thinking about getting a companion for Kip. Well the volunteer who was there forced me in front of a cage containing what I thought at the time was a not very cute 9 month oldish kitten. She proceeded to tell me the sob story of how his brother had already been adopted over a month ago and he had been there the longest. This woman wouldn’t let me look at any other kittens they had. I went home and immediately proceeded to have an anxiety attack thinking about Petie in that cage (he was called ACE at the time – probably because of the diamond shape white spot on his face!). So i went back the very next day and while the thought of having a second cat was giving me anxiety, returned home with cat #2. They TOTALLY tricked me because they wouldn’t even let me foster (and of course NOW i know they do!)
