Vintage Photos: Some Artsy Shots of Bootsie, 1983

Some artsy shots of Bootsie from 1983.
Some artsy shots of Bootsie from 1983.

These photos are from the same “vintage” as Girl and Cat Meet Camera, not from the first roll and probably not the same day, but not too long afterward, a day to a week by the looks of it.

We might call these “Girl and First Born Cat Meet Camera”. Bootsie had grown up with me and probably understood what I was trying to accomplish. She never liked to be picked up or held, but if I gave her space she would come to me and enjoy being near me and being petted a bit. The camera probably seemed to her like a great invention, letting her sit and be herself and have the human keep her hands off. Unfortunately the human wasn’t good at focusing the camera just yet.

So Bootsie gave me a “real” artsy photo: foreshortening, lens blurring, an interesting pose. I probably captured this by mistake, but I like it.

Now that's artsy.
Now that’s artsy.

I was a little too close to get a good photo of her face since her nose is out of focus, but apparently I’m learning.

Now maybe she wants to get away from this foolishness. I’m not sure what I was focusing on here.

Will she get that camera out of my face?
Will she get that camera out of my face?

I was still learning in black and white film only, and I’m glad I did this for the sake of composition. I love these photos for how they focus on Bootsie, and with color they would have just looked like typical photos of my cat, but in black and white they have a mystery. I’m also just glad I have these photos of Bootsie.

Photos pulled “From the Archives” were taken by one or another digital camera of mine between 2002 and, well, yesterday, but usually they are older than that, and I had never had the chance to feature them. Vintage Photos are from my film archives back to 1983 when I purchased my Pentax K-1000 camera. They’re a fun way to “introduce” other members of my feline family who came and went before I began blogging, and to illustrate my feline family in general from days gone by.

This photograph was taken in 1983, when I first got my camera and began photographing with black and white film. Kublai, the kitty who rescued me in college and truly began my life as an animal artist, was only about two years old. Read more and purchase.
