Update on Lakota

There’s not much change in Lakota today. No, the photo above is from a week ago, hard to believe. We were having such a good time—and I was so surprised at how he knew exactly where to go to get the most attention! I knew his personality would make integration a little difficult since he already felt he owned me, but I was looking forward to getting to know him better.

Even with just the first dose of prednisolone and antibiotic you often see just a nudge in the right direction, but nothing came this morning. I even gave him a little Pepcid because reflux is often a problem in his condition, but he wouldn’t look at any food, and making him try to stand up or walk was fruitless—in fact, today he was weaker and less responsive than yesterday.

He’s actually been sleeping in his litterbox, I can’t get him to move to the red bed he loved, and he has his face pressed in the corner, not a good sign. He got his second dose of prednisolone and antibiotic this afternoon and that should have an effect to build on the first doses. He walked around a little, drank a little water, then went back to his box, and would not eat even when I syringed it into his mouth. With these two medications, especially the prednisolone, he should be more active than that and hungrier, without them I don’t like to think what he’d be acting like.

I spent some time today posting new artwork and completing an e-newsletter that, believe it or not is not feline-themed, but I was secretly glad for the flowers and nature and seascapes as I worked with Lakota on my lap for a while. He was not comfortable, but stayed with it as long as he could. He does not look at me, even when I hold him or get down on his level and I’m clearly getting the feeling he’s ready to let go. But he’s not crying in pain, I gave us today to think about it, and I will wait until tomorrow to reassess.

Jojo has been sweeter every moment. Perhaps she appreciated someone noticing her injury yesterday, and she’s being supportive about her best friend.

NOTE: On Monday morning he is comfortable but still not eating, alert but not active. It’s probably just the medications, but I’m going to let him ride for a few days, as long as he wants. He deserves that after all these years.

Homeless Cat Management Team Auction Raised $5,175!

The Homeless Cat Management Team Auction on Dakota’s Auction Page was a HUGE success—you read that right—$5,175! That’s a lot of spays and neuters and low-cost veterinary care, and all from donated items. Thanks to everyone who participated and bid on merchandise. Every penny of it will go to more clinics for the Homeless Cat Management Team.

HCMT YouCaring.com Fundraiser

Thanks to everyone who donated through the YouCaring.com fundraiser for Homeless Cat Management Team in June, the goal of $1,500 for an additional free spay/neuter clinic in 2013 was met! That will mean seven free-for-feral clinics this year, and not a moment too soon with pregnant moms and kittens as well as entire colonies of unaltered cats found nearly every day, many needing treatment for infections and injuries as well as spay and neuter. A special thanks to those readers of The Creative Cat who donated or who made a donate to purchase artwork.

Happy Birthday Every Day

No one here seems to be minding the fact we aren’t posting non-stop about their birthday or Homecoming Day…they have lost their number of friends and understand why, I’m sure. I was planning a couple of giveaways this weekend and a few special articles and art, but we can do them another time. Black Cat Appreciation Day is coming up…

Thanks for Voting in the Petties

Thanks to everyone who’s voted for me and everyone else in the Petties! I hate to ask anyone to vote every day, but many of you have been telling me you have and I can’t thank you enough for your commitment. I’d love to bring home $1,000 for Frankie’s Friends, especially after taking Lakota to see Dr. Morrow at their clinic on Saturday. Dr. Morrow, who founded Frankie’s Friends, not only smiles through a six-minute spay but she also smiles through examining a critically ill cat and giving some pretty bad news about the results of blood tests too, and that’s not easy, I’m sure.

Mimi and I found a little spot of beauty in the garden this morning, cheery rain-sparkling black-eyed susans.

  • Sorry to hear that Lakota has not improved since yesterday. I think you’re right to adopt a wait-and-see attitude. He’ll let you know when it’s time. xo

  • We’re purring for Lakota and for Jojo, too. The head peep knows what a tough time this is and knows that words don’t make it easier. Hugs and purrs for you while you take care of this deserving old mancat.
