Resources for Pets and People

two gray kittens
Jack and Diane needed some resources.

Years ago I began keeping a list of low-cost spay and neuter resources in my area and, printing copies on crayola-orange paper and carrying them with me wherever I went to distribute to whomever I might find who needed the information. I tacked them up on bulletin boards wherever I was permitted, on community boards at all the trails I visited and handed them to people I met who mentioned anything about pets, especially mother cats who’d just had kittens. I also left stacks of them with the cashiers at my local discount stores wherever pet food was sold, and they, knowing most of the customers pretty well, would stuff one in the bag for anyone who needed the information.

When I began The Creative Cat I included the information from this flyer as a page on this site. As time went on I added more and more links for pet resources, drawn from my own needs and the needs of many who asked questions. In addition to low-cost spay and neuter programs for pets as well as TNR for community cats and a link to find a local low-cost program by zip code search, I’ve included after-hours emergency care, help with veterinary costs, finding pet-friendly rentals in Pittsburgh and across the US and tips on renting with pets, links to shelters for adoption and other services, and a link to find animal humane laws by state.

A list of topics on the resources page

  • Links to searchable low-cost spay/neuter programs by state, zip code, region, etc. (cat specific)
  • Low-cost spay/neuter programs in Pittsburgh and surrounding counties through shelters, rescues, clinics, organizations and veterinarians (cat specific)
  • Emergency and after-hours veterinary care (all pets)
  • Shelters in Allegheny and surrounding counties
  • Links to assistance with veterinary bills
  • Links to searchable pet-friendly rentals
  • Animal Cruelty Laws by State

Though much of it is specific for TNR and low-cost programs for cats, many of these same shelters, organizations and clinics also provide services to dogs and other pets, and all the other links on the list apply to all pets.

This information is provided for reference only. I am not in any way promoting or endorsing any of the organizations or businesses linked here. It changes periodically so I check my list quarterly to be certain all the links are still valid. I add new links as I hear of them.

Great Rescues Day Book

This information is part of what’s available in Great Rescues Day Book!

Each month features one of my commissioned portraits of a feline or felines and their rescue story along with a kitty quote on the left page, and on the right page the month name with enough lines for all possible dates, with standard holidays and animal-themed observances and events. Great Rescues also includes a mini cat-care book illustrated with my drawings including information on finding strays or orphaned kittens, adopting for the first time or caring for a geriatric cat, a list of household toxins and toxic plants, or helping stray and feral cats and beginning with TNR.

Each book includes also 10 sheets of my “22 Cats” decorative notepaper with a collage of all the portraits in black and white so you can make your own notes or write special notes to friends.

The portraits in this book, collected as a series, won both a Certificate of Excellence and a Muse Medallion in the 2011 Cat Writers’ Association Annual Communication Contest, as well as the 22 Cats Notepaper mentioned below.
