Others’ Fine Felines: Pearl

angora cat
Pearl Shubin, in her natural state.

Meet Pearl Shubin, fully aware of her Turkish Angora loveliness. Possibly she looks like a centerfold kitty…

The Shubins volunteer for Lost Dog & Cat Rescue in Arlington VA, and this is where they met the lovely Pearl. Pearl is certain they began volunteering so they could meet her. In either case, it worked out on both sides of the deal.

Pearl lives with her “husband” Henry, a sleek and handsome house panther, and a household of other foster failures rescue cats. You can read about others in the household on Sandpiper Cat authored by Rachel Shubin, who named her blog after her very own foster failure, Sandpiper.

When I had the chance to visit the Shubins along with our tortie group in 2011 I had the opportunity to photograph their cats. Though there were eight people at our gathering and six cats, I have two photos of humans and dozens of photos of cats, individually and in couples, sleeping, bathing, enjoying the sun, posing for the camera. Humans are incidental in some of them. While the other cats were ignoring the human with the black eye box, Pearl was actively posing.

We often develop a fondness for animals who resemble those we loved intensely, and Pearl’s cloud of creamy white fur, pink nose and green eyes reminded me of my Sally who was just as camera shy as Pearl.

Here you can see how Pearl’s humans purchased cushions that perfectly matched her eyes. Good humans!

This post is the first in one of my new features—photos of friends’ cats and sometimes other cats I meet. I’m looking forward to many more!

  • Brought back many pleasant memories. Pearl was adorable. But my attention was on Brooke that night. I am fascinated by Torties, especially the wild ones.

  • Interesting about Mae West – Pearl has a distinctive voice that’s kind of gravelly, a few too many whiskeys…

    • Vicki, thanks so much–and I’m pleased to offer a change from all the black kitties. Thanks for the offer, but I want to stay with my own photos, I’m not sure if I could manage keeping track of other peoples’ photos along with all of mine!

  • I believe that Pearl Shubin is a reincarnation of Mae West.
