November Desktop Calendar: Kelly With Grapes and Apple

"Kelly With Grapes and Apple" November 2012 downloadable wallpaper calendar.

I’ve been waiting for this one to come around—when I sketched this back in May I thought it would make a nice piece of artwork for  autumn. It started with the warm golds and oranges and creams in Kelly’s fur, and her contentment in one of her happy spots. It may seem odd that I don’t have much detail on her face; for the most part her face was in shadow in that moment, but though you often saw my social, happy Kelly there was also a quiet part of her that was always hers alone, and in moments like this she enjoyed her own inner reflection.

The autumn colors continued to the olive green in that “totally different” fruit display dish and other related oranges, yellows and greens in the setting continued the autumn theme, and though the bright green grapes and red apple don’t fit that theme they remind me of the Thanksgiving cornucopia.

The original piece of artwork is only 5″ x 7″, and I didn’t quite fill the entire sheet, so having this on a computer screen makes it quite a bit larger than the original. I was concerned about losing definition in the lines especially, but the sketch held up well.

This sketch is also featured on the November 2012 Catnip Chronicles where I will be providing the “monthly cat”.

Below is a list of wallpaper sizes to fit most desktop, laptop and mobile devices.

For these wallpapers I usually like to fill the screen with artwork, cropping it where necessary, and place the calendar somewhere on the art. But I often like to show the rough edges of a piece of artwork, showing the “unfinished” part of the artwork and letting viewers in on part of the creative process. I sketched this in ink and then added watercolor pencil fill, washing that with water to achieve both the sketchy pencil look and the fluid watercolor look, and around the edges you can see this best. I then filled the rest of the screen on each size and shape of wallpaper with a scan of the actual watercolor paper so you can feel you are looking at a sketch, right in the sketchbook.

For the font I used one that is frighteningly close to my handwriting using my ink drawing pen when my hand is kind of cramped after sketching for a while.

I’ll be happy to look at this sketch through the month of November, and I hope you will be too. I’m sure the boys will be glad they no longer have to look at Mewsette in the kitchen all the time.

And reading statistics and knowing that more than half of my readers view this site on a mobile device, I also did a little more research and found the best dimensions for desktop images for mobile devices.

  1. Click on one of the links below that matches the dimensions of your monitor to open the image in a new page.
  2. Right-click on that image and on a desktop computer choose “save as desktop wallpaper” or “save as background” or whichever option your operating system gives you to be able to do this. I’m not entirely sure how this is done on a mobile device, but I’ll bet it’s not too different.
