Marketplace: Two New Dishtowel Designs

Two new dishtowel designs!

Don’t know why I have to decide to make a new product the day before my open house starts. I do it every time. And that’s fine!

I’ve been wanting to make up these dishtowels for a while—probably years. As I’ve been working with the fabric transfers for garden flags I notice they retain a little stiffness when they are freshly pressed, but the designs with more white background than print coverage are a little softer. That’s the thing I like best about these fabric transfers—the transfer itself is very thin and where there is no design, there is very little transfer left on the surface. With a wash and a dry in the dryer, they are just crisp enough to look neat and bright, but soft and absorbent enough to be comfortable to use.

Mimi tests the two new dish towel designs, as only felines can.  I set them down to photograph them, and, well, what was I thinking?

Mimi tests the dishtowels.

You’ll recognize both designs, “Brushy Kitties” and “The TNR Story.” Brushy Kitties is a collage of all my brush pen sketches of my kitties, and you can read more about this here. The TNR Story was inspired by volunteering in post-op at an HCMT clinic in 2014, handling all those feral kitties while still under anesthetic and studying all their shapes and colors and patterns. You can read more about this pattern here.

What you see here is about a quarter of each towel. My transfers are 11 x 17, and I transfer two transfers side by side. When they are hemmed, they will be about 17 x 22.

Basil thinks maybe the “The TNR Story” design is a little small.

Basil isn’t sure.

Well, maybe I do and I’m an influence on him. But I want the little shapes to obviously be kitties at first glance, and even for me they didn’t quite pass that test. I showed them off to visitors to my open house and most agreed with me—we all see kitties everywhere and we know what they are on the towel, especially when I’m selling, but generally they could be about 20% bigger. I figured that out with my proportion wheel, just want to be honest about that precise amount!

“Brushy Kitties” is good as is, and will also have a few variations, namely the color of the cloth. I’ve always pictured this on those mid-century rich pastels, like vanity yellow, camelia pink and robin’s egg blue, and a pastel green that was called turquoise or aqua back in the day. I won’t be using vintage sheets for that for sure—that means finding material so it may be a while before I make those, but I can’t wait to see them. Ultimately, I’d like to have screens of this design made and then I can print them in different colors, but I’ll work out the sizes and products with fabric transfers first.

In part because my shipment of fabric transfers was “lost” just before my open house, I didn’t get a chance to make any quantity, but I’ve received the transfers and they are available for pre-order on my website.
