Marketplace: Cube-shaped Keepsake Boxes Feature Five Paintings Per Box

Five different keepsake boxes.
Five different keepsake boxes.

I have an event next weekend, HCMT & Pittsburgh C.A.T SoulVisions Brunch with Carole Obley, and I’ve been making items for this event—as much as possible in this heat. I decided to make a new set of these cube-shaped keepsake boxes that feature five images on the top and four sides of each box.

When I buy these keepsake boxes to bring home and paint and decorate I buy whatever is in the store, and I like to work with shapes and sizes I haven’t used before. Each box is individually hand decorated and unique. Sometimes I’ll make a popular box to have on hand all the time, but most of the time each box only comes around once.

This set of seven cube-shaped keepsakes ranging from 9″ down to 3″; recently I used them for wildflowers for my Panhandle Trail exhibit as well. Where I typically paint the bottom of the box and only decorate the lid, as soon as I saw this set I could picture images on each face of the box, featuring a lot artwork. I have some natural sets of art in different styles, like “Cats After van Gogh” in oil pastel, and “Winter Cats” themed by the bright winter light that infuses each painting.

So I got home, unpacked the boxes, and began making lists of five paintings to include on each box, and chose these five sets for the biggest boxes in the set.

I print the art to size on commercial label paper and adhere it to the faces of the boxes, and trim the edges of the lids with acrylic paint in a complementary shade to the artwork. The papier-mâché boxes are approximate and sometimes a little irregular, but once they are covered with artwork you’d never know. Use for storage for small items, photos or special keepsakes, or use as gift boxes.

Keepsake Box, Fine Art Cats Cube

I had always wanted to paint my cats in the very detailed style I’d grown up admiring, and these are five paintings in that style.

This papier-mâché box has five of my cat paintings and sketches in pastel from the collection “Fine Art Cats” on the lid and four sides of the box, trimmed with Oxford brown. Box measures 9″ x 9″ x 9″. Price includes shipping.

Keepsake Box, My Cats in the Sun Cube

Bright sunshine on anything will inspire me, especially when it’s illuminating one of my cats…and so I’d like to share that inspiration with other feline fans. These four designs are printed from my original artwork, each of them cats who’ve shared my life past and present.

This papier-mâché box has five of my cat paintings and sketches in pastel from the collection “My Cat in the Sun” on the lid and four sides of the box, trimmed with deep forest green. Box measures 8″ x 8″ x 8″. Price includes shipping.

Keepsake Box, Impressionist Cats Cube

I’ve always been inspired by the Impressionist painters from sketches to paintings. This includes five of many works in the style.

This papier-mâché box has five of my cat paintings and sketches in pastel and an Impressionist style on the lid and four sides of the box, trimmed with bright blue. Box measures 7″ x 7″ x 7″. Price includes shipping.

Keepsake Box, Winter Cats Cube

I love snow light, inside or out, and with the bare trees and in winter I’m reminded of other snowy days and the cats who enjoyed them with me. This set joins four paintings of my cats done in winter light in a looser, Impressionist style, in a series I call “Winter Cats”. Each was rescued from a life outdoors in the cold, ice and snow, and I am glad I could provide a loving home from where they could simply enjoy a snowy day from the inside.

This papier-mâché box has five of my “Winter Cats” pastel paintings on the lid and four sides of the box, trimmed with soft light green. Box measures 6″ x 6″ x 6″. Price includes shipping.

Keepsake Box, Cats After van Gogh Cube

I was so taken by the exhibit “Van Gogh Close Up” that I began visualizing sketches of my cats and other things in techniques and colors that van Gogh may have used, the thick impasto of the paint, the contrasting outlines of figures and bright bold non-objective colors The first of these was “Two Cats After van Gogh”, using oil pastel to create the layered impasto and texture. I also have other keepsake boxes and gift items with other images in this style such as “Mimi on the Windowsill “, “Sunshine in Colors”, and “Kelly’s Yellow Bath”. Please search my shop for those titles to see the items I offer with those images.

In creating my Daily Sketches of my cats I experiment and work in a different style and medium each day. You can read more about these three sketches and other on The Creative Cat (www.thecreativecat.net).

    • Thanks! Now that I have my little “shop” here and things aren’t packed away, I find they look nice just sitting on the shelf too.
