Marketplace: And Something Completely Different, Reprise—Crocheted Pawprints

I’m usually creating “art” and creating merchandise from it. Well, I started out life doing every craft there was available and I still enjoy many of those crafts and the traditional skills I’ve learned over the years. As I’ve decided to finally work on the pattern book for a crochet collar I’d designed in 2009, I’ve also been noodling around with the crocheted pawprint patterns I originally designed for that collar, and then in 2010 crocheted those pawprints and sold as a larger washcloth crocheted in cotton. These photos are of those originals—as you can see, Cookie is modeling! In those days she was the one to stay up with me all night in the studio, and now it’s Mimi.

I crochet all sorts of small things to wear and for my own use around the house and to give as gifts. I’d been working with a pawprint motif for a couple of years at that time, working out the pattern myself and writing it out and knew I wanted to offer something simple in that pawprint pattern.

Viola! a simple washcloth! I started out with three color schemes, solids and pink toe beans, then I worked out other kitty (and doggy) colors from different cotton cotton yarns and from that lots of ideas for interesting color patterns.

Each washcloth is 6″ in diameter side to side, 7.5″ top to bottom, and is made of yarn-dyed cotton. At the time I’d worked these out I played around with a few other uses for the pattern but then stopped and just made the pawprints. As I’d mentioned in my article about the collar, I found my crochet time while sitting in doctors’ offices and hospital rooms with my mother at that time and I could remember the pattern and practically crochet a series of pawprints without looking so it worked well with my distractions and fragmented time.

But there were s-o-o-o-o-o many other ideas for what I wanted to do with the pawprints: stitch two together and make a bath mitt, or line the two and make a little purse, make a bunch of little ones and stitch them together for a table runner, or a bunch of big ones and stitch them together for a scarf. Make little ones in acrylic yarn to wash out cat food cans and bigger ones to scrub the cat food dishes. Use multiple strands of yarn or bulky yarn—or both—and a really big needle and make a cat bed or a rug. The ideas are still endless! In the intervening years I’ve worked out each of those items and then used them around the house or gave them as gifts, really never thinking I’d get back to this project. Now I wish I still had the samples I’d crocheted to photograph and use in the pattern book I’m putting together.

That’s the true goal for this—I can’t possibly crochet all those things to sell, my hands won’t stand up to it anymore. But I can sell patterns and then all you crafty people can do your thing!

I hope to have individual patterns available within a month, and the pattern book after that. It’s good to finish off all these ideas that have been waiting almost ten years to complete!
