Mama Mimi and Her Boys

three black cats
Mama Mimi, tiny in comparison, is surrounded by her boys, Giuseppe on the left and Mr. Sunshine on the right.

Mimi spent all day encircled and loved by her two biggest sons, Mr. Sunshine and Giuseppe Basil Verdi.

I posted on Facebook earlier today that I wished my cats would stop being so beautiful and cute and inspiring so I could get something done other than take photos of them. It’s true, every time I turned around there they were again, in another position of absolute relaxation, a pile of black fur with ears, or happily bathing each other. I wish more of those photos had come out well, but with black cats and a dim house to keep cool on a hot day, it’s difficult for my poor camera to focus, but it did its absolute best.

I received a new cable modem with wireless router to install yesterday. I installed it last night and packed the old one in the big box, which immediately became a really special cat bed. I awoke while it was still dark last night because all my fans were running and it actually felt cold, and when I turned them off I realized there was not one cat on my bed or in my bedroom. I sat up in bed picturing someone having broken into one of my doors and let them all out, or a screen missing in one of my windows where they’d managed against a lot of odds to dislodge it. I walked downstairs and in the dark saw an even darker shape—all five of the black cats piled on top of The Box. I didn’t bother with my camera then, but went back to bed confident that someone could leave all the doors open but they weren’t leaving that box for anything!

So today, beginning right after breakfast, another marathon sleepfest began on The Box with Mimi, the box queen, joined by Mr. Sunshine, who conveniently curled in a semi-circle that perfectly fit Mimi’s tiny shape. They were joined by Giuseppe who tired of watching the birds, and the three spent the entire day, from about 10:00 a.m. to almost 10:00 p.m. sleeping on The Box, at one point joined by Mewsette, but only breaking their relaxation for a shuffling of positions and a communal bath. By the end of the day they had pretty much melded into one big puddle of black cat fur with ears.

I hope Comcast doesn’t mind that the lid of the box is all bent up when they get it back with the old modem.

Below is a slideshow of images of their activities on The Box today.

    • Susan, after four days they have finally moved on, though they are still spending part of each day there. Mimi has adopted it as her lookout!

    • Savannah, Mimi is a few notches above their human, believe me! They love their Mama Mimi more than anything, and she gets away with anything she wants, like walking all over them! But she really is tiny, and I’m always a little surprised when she stands up and stretches her back, there’s just nothing to her.

  • Fly expensive toys. Fly expensive cat baskets and beds. Just keep the packaging everything comes in and you’re done. Cats and boxes?!?!

    • Susan, indeed, who needs store-bought stuff when a BOX can fit all five!

  • Great picture, Bernadette – you know how I love black kitties! Is Mama Mimi really small, or are her boys on the larger side?

    • Chris, thanks, same here! Yes, Mama Mimi is 6.5 lbs. while her sons are at least 12 lbs., and she is especially compact and petite. Sometimes she looks like a kitten instead of an adult cat!

  • That’s a particularly precious photo, B!! I Love it. Thanks.
I bet the sight of all 5 on the box gave you a Big Smile to take back to bed with you.
I look forward to seeing the slideshow. xxx

    • Annie, the server where my site is located was having troubles for the past week, and especially last night, but the slideshow is up now and I think you’ll like it. Yes, I stood there for a while just looking at them to remember!
