Framed Daily Sketch, “Black Cats Dreaming in Color”

I’m always happy to send off a piece of artwork to a good home, especially when I can frame it in a special way, and I couldn’t do it without my felines. (Also note the tooth marks on both sides of the bottom bard of the easel.)

This sketch is “Black Cats Dreaming in Color”, one of those sketches that I enjoy for its whimsy and because I just got out my colors and let it happen. Who every said black cats would dream in black and white?

I love the colors in it and had long had the idea for framing it. The person who purchased it also purchased “Dreams of Three” and had me frame that sketch, and wanted to keep the styles similar because the two would hang together. But “Dreams of Three” is so light and blue, how could I coordinate the two?

Well, finding a mat board that’s about the same color as the drawing paper for starters, and mat boards also come in “color cores”, like the white mat with the blue edge or “core” I used on “Dreams of Three”. I really wanted tiny bits of all those colors in the drawing. But the matboard that was the same color as the drawing paper—made by the same company, Canson, was only available in black core. Well, that would do, but then I discovered that color had been discontinued. Disaster! No other color I knew of came even close to this odd pinkish-brownish paper with threads of gray.

Eventually, after ordering a few other samples, I found one that matched the base color of the drawing paper, available in both white and black core. The white core was too weak, and even though I tried I couldn’t color the edge with markers and get the same bright colors because the board absorbed and darkened the marker color. The black core looked fine, to my surprise—I thought it would be too heavy—but when I laid it out with three mats, similar to the original it was just too much, partly because I had drawn the sketch right up to the edge of the paper and I had no space between the mat and the art, and the rectangles conflicted with the squiggly lines. Even the one with the white core didn’t work, and so I ended up with one mat, and it looks fine.

I did have assistance with the entire operation, and supervision while framing.
