Featured Artwork: Cats in Winter Sunlight

“Shadows and Light”, pastel on pastello paper, 9″ x 12″ © B.E. Kazmarski

Sunlight reaching far in through the kitchen door, sun puddles on the landing, long shadows and silhouettes, its low angle reaching farther inside than any other time of year, winter sunlight creates art all on its own. It’s inspired several paintings and many sketches in black and white and simplified contrasting colors as well as full color. I thought I’d just share galleries of some of my favorites this week, starting with the black and white images and moving up to the color images.

Most of the black and white sketches are ones I’ve never featured on their own, but you can search the title of the artwork to read more about it. Others they aren’t listed on my website, but all are available as prints or even as originals.

I have to note that five of the subjects in this gallery are Mimi. Where would I be without her?

Such an inspiration, who knows? I may go off and create some more.

Where to find this art

I may still have the original, but in all cases also have prints available in various sizes and styles on paper and canvas, and sometimes I also have the images on gift items such as jewelry, tiles and keepsake boxes. You can search the title of all the artwork above here on The Creative Cat to read more about it. Some of these aren’t listed for sale on my ecommerce website www.PortraitsOfAnimals.net , but all are available as prints or even as originals. If you are interested in a sketch that isn’t listed there, just send me an email on the site.

Each Wednesday I feature a piece of feline artwork from the archives to the present day, discuss its history and process, and often set it up as a free downloadable desktop calendar for just about every electronic device available.

  • Yup! If there is a sunbeam, a cat will find it and enjoy it too!

    • And the best thing about that is then they hold still long enough for me to get a sketch done.

    • Thanks Terry! Contrast and a little bit of visual drama are the big inspirations for me, and cats and sunlight always provide.

Enchanting, Bernadette! I think pastels are your best medium. Thanks for sharing, and be well.

    • Thanks so much, anonymous! I do love to experiment, but pastels are second only to pencil in being a native language of art for me.
