Featured Artwork and October Desktop Calendar: Enter Three WITCHES

three black cats with pumpkin and lamp
Three WITCHES.

I’ve gotten some pretty unique photos of my cats, and this one is one of the most unique. Gathering around the lamp is interesting enough, especially this little hurricane-style lamp. Then add a pumpkin because it was October, and it’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

Taken on October 18, 2010, the cats were gathering around the lamp as they do on the first cool nights. I saw them there, held my breath that they would stay where they were and got my camera, considering the challenges of getting a photo with so much contrast. I used my DSLR on which I can manually adjust all the settings. I had to adjust to “shoot dark” or underexpose the first images because the lamp was so bright all else looked black—one of the constant challenges of photographing black cats even in the best light! And then, of course, they were shuffling around just a bit. The initial photos were of a lamp with a few unrecognizable shadowy figures around it. I modified my settings until you could discern cats, and adjusted from there, moving the pumpkin to where you see it. The images were so dark and the lamp so bright I had to work with them in Photoshop to even things out, toning down the lamp and lightening up the black cats. I ended up combining a few images taken within the space of two minutes to get everything the way I had actually seen it.

The title and text are taken from Shakespeare, and phrased with capitals and italics as it was in the original manuscript. As I wrote when I shared it:

When shall we three meet again?
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

Guess the kids have been getting into my literature textbooks again. I thought my Riverside Shakespeare was too heavy for them, but there is no getting in the way of a determined reader. Now that they’ve mastered Act 1, Scene 1 of MacBeth, I can’t wait to see how they interpret Scene 2.

Maybe reading to them as kittens really did work.

Actually, Mimi, Mewsette and Giuseppe were gathered around the lamp “to keep warm” as they said, because the temperature was all of about 65 degrees. Time to get out the cozy beds!
