Daily Sketch Reprise: Tonal Nap, 2013

Giuseppe was napping, as usual, outside the door of my studio in a pool of sun on the landing. We’ve all grown accustomed to that piece of cardboard, they’ve been enjoying it as a scratching item and bed and big toy, and I’ve been enjoying it as an art element in my sketches and photos.

The floor and the cardboard are about the same color, and the same colors appear in Giuseppe as well. I’ve been wanting to sketch him for a couple of weeks and finally had the chance. I used my 24-pastel set with just limited colors; I wanted to keep that limited tonal range that I’d been admiring.

Below is a cropped version of the sketch above.

It’s interesting to see these sketches in my third year of them—the light is the same and our activities are quite the same, and I nearly did another sketch quite like this one the other day!

Just as I’ve worked other collections of art into collages like “22 Cats” and “Brush Kitties” I’m also working with these looser pastels I’ve done recently, either as collages or multiple images on one item.

This painting actually sold last year! I am always glad to see them go to a good home—and you know who you are!

What was I sketching a year ago today?

Mr. Sunshine Demands, 2012

With that tall tail he is so sweet. Typically the tail is quite straight, bending forward slightly at the very tip, but here he had been playing and was very excited about something. I said something totally ingenious, like, “Mr. Sunshine!” He came to the doorway, demanding to know what I wanted. He stood there long enough to get a little outline done, then disappeared back into the kitchen. I called him back a few more times to get the rest of the details. The expression on his face is from the last callout.

Speaking of “Brush Kitties”, Mr. Sunshine has a prominent place in that collection, including this sketch! It’s been so much fun to work my way through all these sketches and follow through with projects using them as illustrations.
