Daily Sketch Reprise: The Dishtowel Drawer

When three great minds get together to accomplish something, it should be somehow recorded, even if they had no idea what they wanted to accomplish. Mr. Sunshine steps on one edge of the drawer while Giuseppe keeps an eye on Bean, who is trying to get into it from the floor.

I admit I kind of set them up for this but it was their idea first. I had opened the drawer for a dishtowel and there was a sudden interest in its contents and a desire to explore. I immediately visualized a sketch in markers, closed the drawer, got my art supplies and lured them all back, sketching them one by one when each reached a position I liked.

I like to challenge myself with odd angles and interesting perspectives so that I need to really study my subjects. After all, I see them all the time so it would be easy to make assumptions that I “know” what I’m drawing when what is there is actually quite different from what I’m thinking I see.

One of these days I’ll remember to get a juicy new black brush marker, but for now I like the sketchy unfinished look. Still, I also like the look of the strong lines and colors in “On the Chair”, which is what I had in mind when I visualized them. We’ll see what I do.

. . . . . . .

What was I sketching a year ago today?

Jelly Bean settled down in the wash of sun on the wardrobe after breakfast, sun streaming through the casement and filling the lace curtain with light.

I have always enjoyed building up the shadows with cross-hatches, but looked forward to working out the pattern in the lace curtain.

The secret is often simplicity, like the window, just two heavier bars and three vertical lines.

Except that Bean looks as if he’s slipping off the edge because his elbow was lapped over it, but I ran out of space to show the rest of him was solidly on the furniture!
