Daily Sketch Reprise: Sitting on the Floor With My Cats

They are not quite on my lap, and there are a few on either side of me who didn’t make it into the sketch, but it’s one of my favorite ways to spend some time with my cats, especially with just one me and more cats than that. When I had as many as ten, it was the only way for everyone to have a chance at my lap, at least when we weren’t sleeping. But there’s something cats love when you get down on the floor with them.

I was working in my studio and decided to sit on the floor to stretch out my legs and take care of some proofreading. Mimi was on me before I was even completely seated, and I kept glancing at them past what I was reading as they settled around me. It was quite a reach to get my drawing materials from there. Mimi was adamantly on my thigh, and Bean was carefully balanced on my calf…at one point I had Mewsette on my other thigh and Mr. Sunshine sitting by my feet and Giuseppe next to me. It’s another interesting awkward angle too. I’m going to have to get bigger paper for things like this, but I’m sure we’ll do it again.

. . . . . . .

What was I sketching a year ago today?

Four on the Floor

The Fantastic Four have dinner on the floor, but they are not so close together; the artist drew them a bit too large.

All cats eat a little differently, and while most crouch some stand, some curve themselves around their bowl, some like to be off at a distance from the others. These four, predictably, all eat about the same, and don’t mind close proximity.

From top left it’s Mewsette, Jelly Bean, Mr. Sunshine and Giuseppe.

Because I feed them raw food which I dispense with my hands and therefore have to wash my hands thoroughly after I’ve handled it, it was a real trick to get their food to them, wash my hands well, dry them thoroughly so I wouldn’t have damp handprints on the sketchpaper, and catch enough of each of them before they decided they were done and a bath was in order.

I can kind of see it as a fabric pattern.
