Daily Sketch Reprise: Mewsette Sketchpage, 2014
I did one main sketch of Mewsette washing her toes, but decided I didn’t like it enough to stand alone so I did a few more little ones on the same page.
I spent several hours framing things at my work table, and after the initial setup with Mewsette, Giuseppe and Bean joined us. Ultimately I lured them away so that I could get my project done and not be up all night, but Mewsette returned to check on me every half hour or so, which was very kind of her while others slept to disturb her own nap to stop by and brighten my evening with purrs and lots of loose furs. She had a bath and washed her toes, and sat between the photos and mats on the table, then found deep meditation while observing a stinkbug on the shelf. All in all it was a good night.

What else was I sketching on this date?

Jade, 2013
Mimi has been sitting on the windowsill to watch the birds in the morning, and has the choice of turning to look out the window behind her that looks into the side yard with feeders right outside, or the window on the opposite wall that looks out front with another feeder and birdbath, and the street that’s just busy enough with cats and dogs and people to keep her looking back and forth.
I photographed her yesterday in this pose and used it for a story she “wrote”, and thought how nice that would be as a three- or four-color block print or screen print, simple shapes and nice contrasting colors. Then this morning she sat in the same position but the sun was shining on the leaves of the jade plant and it was just too inspiring. I sketched her and the leaves, but it wasn’t until evening that I inked it in with my markers. I may need to pursue this design! I like it with the white behind, or perhaps even a pale blue.
I like the title “Jade”, and perhaps if I use it for something outside of publishing here people might think Mimi’s name is actually Jade. She likes that. She is sitting on my right hand right now as I’m typing.
Thinking about new markers…
Also have to be a little more diligent at cleaning the cat hair off the platen of my scanner.

Twilight Cats, 2012
No, not like vampires and all that, just at the twilight time of day, Mimi and Jelly Bean looking out the window into the blue of twilight.
I love cat silhouettes. Of course this family of black cats is natural for that, but I have also identified my cats by their silhouettes no matter their color. The other reason is that cats often have an introspective time where they are simply quiet and the silhouettes always remind me of that other part of the I also love. In addition to the two colors and sketchiness, I also picture this with fabric-like fills, as if they were appliqués on a quilt.
Of course, I just did this sketch since it is now finally fully dark. Mewsette absolutely tortured me while I finished the indigo on the figures and especially the dusk in the background, biting my pencil, biting my sketchbook, headbutting my arm, happily walking all over my lap and generally being disruptive. So much for neatly coloring. But Mewsette was so happy I couldn’t make her leave.
