Daily Sketch Reprise: Looking Out the Window, 2012

Another one of my favorite ink drawings! Looking back on these sketches as I worked out this ink style I have to say it was a medium I’d always wanted to master but didn’t feel I had enough control, even though I wanted the sketches to be loose and freehand. This is one of the rewards of and reasons for practicing the daily sketches.

. . . . . . .

Jelly Bean peeks through the cafe curtains as I sit at my desk working after dark; what he can see out there is probably something I would never be able to see, but he is raptly attentive.

A lot of ink sketches lately; I’ve been exploring line and pattern, shading and even just outlines, leaving the color out intentionally. This one, however, I am tempted to add color to at some point, in part for the gentle tan and brown tones as well as the blue and deep red in the curtain.

Ironically, I like it better at about one-quarter this size—the lines and shadows work much better.
