Daily Sketch Reprise: Feline Punctuation, 2013

Another one of those visualizations as I awoke today. I could feel cats tucked up against me all around, two on one side, two on the other, and one at my feet. They tend to trade places so I wasn’t sure who was where, but of course they are all black, and as I laid there, face in my pillow, trying to determine which was who, I could picture them black against the white bedspread, and then as quotation marks on either side of me, and a period by my feet. So here it is, not sure if it works visually, but this is pretty much what I visualized.

This was from four years ago and right now there are eight black cats and a gray one, guess I’ll have to imagine a new one!

What else was I sketching on this date?

In this case the interpretation of that phrase is literal. I looked down at the boys sleeping curled but touching, in a series that looked as if one cat led to the next cat.

Black cats on a white floor, I had my sketchpad and charcoal pencil at hand. Simple shapes sleeping, the furnace is right under the floor where they were lined up and they were not moving but enjoying the morning kitchen. I thought of all the interesting things I could do with their shapes in color and style, but I decided to keep the shapes simple and almost abstract, so they could relax.

. . . . . . .

What other sketches did I share on or around this date ?

Mewsette curls up for a nap under the kitty keep-warm lights at the desk in my office downstairs.

No more full coverage with the charcoal, just good, heavy lines with lots of variation in shape and opacity to help describe both Mewsette’s outline and dimensional shape.

My cats and I are creatures of habit, but of evolving habits. For days my cats had been crowding under the kitty keep-warm lamps but have been slowly losing interest and only Mewsette remains to act as feline paperweight on my desk. At the same time I have been exploring my piece of vine charcoal with their outlines and shapes, fur and eyes and paws, working with different techniques every day; their shapes and the density of the shadows under the high-intensity lamps inspired this exploration. We work together on these things, but I am feeling we are all ready to move on to new media, and they to a new heat source.
