Daily Sketch: Nap on the Box

ink sketch of two cats on box

Mewsette and Mimi were looking quite sweet on the box this morning, while the box is losing its loft as the to is caving in from the weight of so many cats. I thought I’d give them a nice cool blue background in hopes it would keep them feeling cool through the day. Nobody moved much today, including me.

  • I forgetting to ask: how long does it take for you to do a sketch? The gestural poses are so fresh.

    • Layla, sometimes it’s just a few seconds, but usually it’s a minute or two; some of the more complicated ones, like the watercolors and pastels, take as much as ten or fifteen minutes. I actually try for that freshness, working with my line quality as well as form and composition. Working in the studio, when you can take your time and study your photos and go away for a few hours and come back, I tend to get a little stiff. I had always noticed that working en plein air for landscapes really refreshed my sense of color and essential detail but this past year it hasn’t been to possible, and that’s exactly why I began the daily cat sketches, so that when I went to create an image by hand I was ready.

In this particular one I am using a brush pen I purchased on sale and discovered I love–it’s actually a fountain pen with a real medium liner bristle brush in place of the nib. It’s so sensitive and I just adore it. Thanks for noticing!
