Daily Sketch: Mewsette Did Not Give Up Her Basket
In fact, she slept in it all afternoon (a reference to today’s photo).
The lighting is a little puzzling because my worklight shone down on her back but left her head in shadow. The only real distinguishing factor is her ear.
I had to sort my orders into another basket. Too bad for me.

Bath Interrupted, 2013
Well, Mewsette was bathing so nicely and I was observing and just ready to catch the action when a wrestling match broke out and all was lost. I hadn’t visualized enough to finish, but I kind of liked this once it dried—she has one hind leg out through her front legs and was leaning down to bathe it. Those brothers…

Dinner for Three, 2012
The boys enjoy their dinner on the floor in a casual array while their mother and sister dine on the cabinet. It is Giuseppe, Jelly Bean and Mr. Sunshine counter-clockwise from the bottom left.
This is my old favorite charcoal pencil. I keep one in the kitchen for handy sketching so I don’t have to drag the big bag of art toys in there with me. At dinnertime, space is at a premium. I usually sketch just the graceful outline in it but this time I wanted to do something a little different, a heavier line with a little bit of modeling. They are inky black against the light kitchen floor, but I don’t like to lose the details of their extremities by filling them in. Besides, I did that already, in brush marker in a sketch with a very similar title. Well, some things never change.

Must Have a Clean Tail, 2011
Right in the middle of washing his face, Jelly Bean noticed his tail was dirty. Down came the paw to scoop up his tail and give it a good bath lest it get away.
This sketch is in charcoal, and I should explain that most of the charcoal I use is in pencil form, which is a little denser than the vine type, and also a little more durable as I carry it around and cats swat at it as I work. I like the blackness of it, though the lines will never be as fine and smooth as pencil.
Speaking of Jelly Bean, he just showed up again. I swear they know when I’m writing about them.

Tortie Girls Grays from Portraits of Animals!
These are lightweight 10″ x 13″ pine wood trays each with a hand-colored and signed block print of my tortie girls, “The Goddess” and “The Roundest Eyes”, adhered in the bottom.
