In honor of Lucy’s birthday here is another draft of a sketch for Lucy’s book! You know how kitties like to run and leap and slide into home plate when there’s a rug on the floor. The poor rug never knows what hit it! And Lucy did such things every single day. I admit I put an extra rug here and there for her to play with. It was one of the many things she loved to do that I’ll have included in the story.

The colors didn’t scan quite right, though. The yellow background and the is a pale yellow and the rug is a little too orange, but sometimes that’s how it comes out. I’ve been developing my palette with each sketch for this book so that when I got to actually do the paintings I’ll know which colors go where. The theme includes the bright green floor, pale yellow walls and the objects Lucy plays with in neutrals plus green and fuschia and maybe a few other colors, all so that solid black Lucy stands out in all that light background and bright color. It should all be simple and whimsical and colorful.

I had tried her hind legs one up and one down, but I think when I do the final both hind legs will be in the air so she is leaping fully into the rug!

  • It is cute right now, but I think both back legs in the air will work even better, Bernadette.

    • I think so too, Sued–I regretted painting in that leg as soon as I’d done it, though it looked okay in pencil. It will actually be a two-page spread with more scatter rugs behind her as well, so she’s leaping from one to another.
