Daily Sketch: Black on Blue and Red, Variations

Inspired by Bean’s perfect black fur, so shiny and dense black, against the crimson and cobalt fleece blankets I grabbed the first medium available to me—my hard pastels and small sketchbook. My camera was downstairs so I had no chance for a reference photo, but determined to get his little shape and all the colors on paper as quickly as possible.

But the paper was coarser than I’d remembered and I couldn’t get the denseness of his black or the colors of the blankets. Still, I finished it as closely as I could to what I’d visualized.

Then as time went by I visualized it another way and later I decided to do the same sketch with watercolor pencils, washing the lines with water to soften some and leave others, and create shadows and shapes with the liquid paint.

Really, neither of them looks like my visualization, but that’s okay, they are what they are.
