Jelly Bean’s roundness is a little exaggerated but it really was a big nap. Another one of the feline shapes I love.

No Room for Mimi, 2014

Another iteration of “Perfect Fit” from earlier today, but this time not such a purrfect fit because there was no room for Mimi on the chair. Giuseppe in green and Bean in blue had taken the entire seat, and though she politely hopped up and tucked herself in the corner of the seat to wait for them to shuffle slowly and open a spot, they did not. Even when she uncurled her tail from around herslf and tapped it against Giuseppe’s face, he did not move. What is a mama cat to do when her own sons won’t share with her? Walk on them, that’s what. It worked.

My old old computer in my studio went into retirement last week. The data is still there but it won’t run programs. This is the computer I usually use to scan all my artwork, and that’s the computer from which I usually post it. I’ve spent more time running up and down the stairs to draw in up my studio then scan downstairs, but at least I’m getting exercise. The big drawback is that the downstairs scanner is okay, but the one in my studio is fantastic. I’m looking for a new old computer for the studio, but until then I have this hitch in my work flow!

Playing, 2013

Bean stands just a bit on his hind legs and prepares to attack the wicked toy!

These action shots have been quite the challenge but very fun. I study them while they play—oh, poor me, I have to watch my cats play—and look for what makes the action look complete. This is the same thing I do while they sleep in looking for the significant details that are essential to the image.

Kelly in Silhouette, 2012

Kelly is having a good bath in the sun while shadows and reflections fall all around her from the light streaming in the window. In the strong light she was in silhouette but highlighted by the light on her fur. What better than the depth of charcoal and the strong natural red of conté? A quick outline was all I got before she decided I should feed her and she left her bath and came to me, purring. I finished the rest from memory.

Wish I’d grabbed my pastels before I saw her and ran back to my desk where I keep my art materials. I had headed into the kitchen for a lemonade and found her happily bathing in the sun. Often, the sun falls the same way and they will spend a few days in a certain pattern. Perhaps I can catch her another day.
