Daily Sketch: Bath

What is more familiar than a cat having a bath? I was poised to sketch the face wash and then the bath moved to the hip. By necessity these sketches are quick, 30 seconds maybe, and I rarely even directly look at the paper while I sketch. I trust my hand to follow what my eye sees. Some days I get there, some days I don’t, or so it looks to me, but I always end up enjoying these brush pen sketches.

I’ve run out of clever names for sketches of baths, though!

What other sketches have I shared on or around this date?

Mewsette catches the bright warm flow of early morning sun trough the back door and into the kitchen. Both she and the shadows are fairly solid black and the light and highlight fairly solid yellow with very little secondary or reflected light.

Since most of the drawing was in shadow I decided in this case to use dark paper and draw the light. My pad of pastello paper didn’t have a good deep brown or green so I used black, which is a little stark but carries the idea well.

Toe Cleaning, 2012

What black cats? The Fantastic Four again provide inspiration for a new idea. Of course, if they’d each held still for a little longer you could truly see they were bathing. Orange is Mr. Sunshine, blue is the Bean, green is of course Giuseppe Verdi and magenta is Mewsette.

I was out most of the day and did this late. Mr. Sunshine said he wasn’t going to pose until he had dinner, I said no one was getting dinner until I got my sketch done. The result is a frazzled looking Sunshine because he was being a brat.

They are drawn in ink markers using the brush tip for varied lines.

Funny how some things don’t change—today was much the same for me, and tonight they are identical to this!

Three Cats Looking, 2014

This is what I saw, three cats from behind. I don’t think they are really looking at anything, in fact I think they are having a quiet feline discussion; dinner is imminent. I was sure they’d move by the time I got my materials ready, but the only thing that moved was ears and a turn of the head. They are connected because, well, they are connected.

Sometimes I like to include a photo of the scene if I took one, and below is the photo I took before I began to work, certain they’d lose the pose if they noticed me looking at them especially if they thought it would get dinner faster. Their posteriors are rather exaggerated at this angle.

Kelly Scratching, 2012 and Round and Round, 2013

Kelly was sitting up and dozing, a perfect way to capture her slender posture and markings

Then she awoke, probably feeling me studying her, took a swipe at her nose, had a scratch and otherwise cleaned herself up trying to catch up with all the bathing that wasn’t getting done while she had dozed off.. This is the result.

It’s colored pencil, and if it’s difficult to tell, except for Kelly’s tail, just exactly what is happening among all Kelly’s spots, well, that’s just the way Kelly is.

Round and Round, 2013

Even a slender cat can look round when cuddling with brother. Giuseppe, who is long, and Jelly Bean who is short, fit very well together.
