Daily Photo: Why We Couldn’t Visit the Yard Yesterday
Mimi watches round-eyed through the safety of the deck railing as the three deer slowly browse their way out of our yard.
I carefully check the yard before I go outside on the deck with Mimi. Likely I’ll be filling the bird feeders and Mimi has her little routine on the deck as well, scratching the old wooden stool in the corner, smelling everything and rubbing her face against select corners and edges. Only then are we ready to venture out into the yard.
That gives both of us enough time to see the deer, if they are out. I don’t want anyone to get spooked. In this case, I’d been photographing the deer, first through the basement door and then through the back door, then out on the deck. When they’d moved safely to the corner of the yard I let Mimi outside with me.
In the basement, at the washer facing away from the basement door, I felt eyes on my back. I turned around and the yearling was watching me, from across the yard and through the screen door and the window in the interior door. She, I believe, had been browsing on the compost pile just behind her. The blur is caused by photographing through that old metal screen, but it adds an interesting softness to a photo.
Her two adult companions, the sisters, were unconcerned about me, nibbling around and having a drink at the bird bath.
They all moved a little farther up the yard and I could run to my back door and get a photo of them all together.
I’ve painted the two girls before as they browsed in the brushy area between the back yards in a painting called “Safe”. I think I’ll do a few more.

Hamlet’s been doing this lately: beheading and eviscerating one of his toy mousies and leaving it in the empty food bowl. Is he leaving me a gift or giving me a menu suggestion?
And he also does this. Can you see he’s sitting up like a meerkat? Hamlet is just non-stop interesting, and I can’t wait until he relaxes a little more and I meet the rest of his personality. Yes, he does look as if he’s trying to look like a lamp base.
