Daily Photo: When You Find a Comfy Box

Sienna loves her little box.
Sienna loves her little box.

Possession is 9/10s of the law, as I grew up hearing, and that certainly works in the favor of cats and their favorite boxes. I set this little box from envelopes on the cabinet last weekend, intending to refill it with something, because a good box with a lid is a treasure when storing stashes of little things. But Sienna apparently thinks she is a little thing and that the box now belongs to her despite my initial possession of the aforementioned box. She even pulled out the head tilt and the sad kitty expression. You don’t win with a cat, especially when a box is in question. Even when she has to really curl up tight to stuff herself into it, and even then she…doesn’t really fit.

My Three Sons in the Shop, 2018

My Three Sons do their best to make a browsing experience in my shop more enjoyable for friends who stop by for a few things.

Susan visited to do a little shopping on Sunday and the kids were thrilled. After some arranging and rearranging as she and I talked and she browsed, I saw that Giuseppe, Mr. Sunshine and Jelly bean had lined up on the dresser in front of the display. My cats regularly sit there because it’s a great lookout spot, seeing all the room, up the steps and out both windows. But really, they were interested in her. Who could resist?

I call it my shop though it’s just a tight little display. Little by little I’ve been expanding it, but I like to think of it as a shop. I love to turn the lights on within it and just look at it.

And not a cat in sight, but she took a photo of me as I added up her purchases. She asked me to look at her and I was like, “Hmm?” then I realized she’d taken my photo! But I never really know what I look like so a photo of me is nice!

Me in my shop.

Susan had another reason to visit too. She is actually the human of the kitties in the portrait of the three calico cats, Percy, Augie and Ebi and the rescue story The August Kitten. Obviously I’ve done a few portraits for her, and she has always had cats. She lost one earlier this year and has been catless for a while, and mentioned she was interested in the Greenbriar kittens after I posted about them. So we went over to visit them after she did her shopping, and she decided to adopt two of them! More on that in another post.

And on Saturday kitties had a visit from Auntie Norma Clouse who stopped to give them each a new, fresh, handmade catnip toy! A party was had by all, and then they had a big nap before it started all over again. Thanks so much, Norma!

Photos Before Breakfast, 2017

Five sunny cats.
Five sunny cats.

Finally, the sun came up with no clouds in the way! The kitchen was full of sun, and everyone was sopping it up. Mewsette settled in the center and Giuseppe and Jelly Bean settled with her, then Mimi moved toward the door and Mr. Sunshine went to give her a little bath. Everyone milled around, happy, and wrestling or rolling now and then.

These three would not move until the sun had moved, and everyone was so distracted there was no breakfast until they had had their fill of precious sunshine.

From Instagram, Thanksgiving Day

We heard that other kitchens had WARM OVENS with REAL TURKEYS inside!
Their turkey will be roasted tomorrow when I make a batch of homecooked food for them. Until then, this is what I have to deal with.

I gave them some leftover turkey from the home I’d visited. Perhaps that was what caused them to be so excited this morning.

Morning, 2017
Waiting.
Waiting.

Mimi was both enjoying the sun and simply waiting for me to open the door so we could go outside. Bella was enjoying the sun and spending time with Mimi. They made a lovely composition in several photos.

Pondering.
Pondering.

I still like to post the nicer photos from my DSLR in addition to the ones I share from my phone so I guess we’ll be seeing even more photos some days. Part of the reason is that I’m also building my e-commerce site at the same time, which will include a gallery of images to choose from for custom cards, prints and such in addition to the ones I already offer. It’s hard for me to choose, and feedback is much appreciated.

Enjoy!

Seven Black Cats in Four Square Feet, 2014
seven black cats on the cabinet
All seven on the cabinet!

Looks like I may need a bigger cabinet!I finally got all seven of them up there at once—they do this at least once a day, but one jumps down or is completely hidden or the photo is just too blurry and the most I’ve posted on the cabinet so far is six.

I’m not even preparing their dinner yet and they’ve all gathered up there, milling around. As you can imagine, it’s difficult to get a good photo of this—along with the everyday challenges of photographing black cats even in good light when they are holding still. Also, if I talk to them, they jump down and come over to me! So I need to keep a camera near and at the ready, keep an eye on them as they arrange themselves without looking at them, then quickly turn around, point and photograph before they jump down and come over to me—or simply jump down because it’s pretty crowded up there!

I did try to get them all looking at me, but that was when they jumped down.

Clockwise, starting from the lower left corner:

  • Mewsette has all four paws balanced on the very corner of the cabinet
  • next to her is Smokie, but you can only see his ears here
  • Mimi is on the back left corner of the cabinet
  • next to her and facing away is Bella
  • at the other corner and facing in is Jelly Bean
  • crouched at the front right corner about to jump down is Giuseppe
  • and in the middle front with the very direct expression is Mr. Sunshine

And in the next second three of them were on the floor and one on the table, and it was all over for the moment.

It’s Right There! 2013
black cat watching wren
It’s just Bean’s luck—there’s a window!

But there’s a window in the way! While we were visiting Emeraude in the bathroom today…well, I was visiting Emmie while Bean was conspiring to somehow get at least a taste of her food, and purring very nicely all the while. We both heard something tapping outside the window and while Bean leaped up to the windowsill I pulled myself up to see a wren on the windowsill with a real prize—a black oil sunflower seed! She rapped it against the windowsill and eventually it popped open so she could quickly gobble sunflower heart inside. Off she flew to get another, probably without knowing that one black cat and one human were intently watching, albeit for different purposes.

Civil Disobedience, 2013

Mr. Sunshine gives me the knowing expression as Mewsette hurries in for the civil action.

When five black cats won’t look at you but sit like statues on Easter Island, you know it’s time for dinner.

Sometimes I work on the computer in the kitchen, which in feline experience means I pay a lot of attention to it, or at least the keyboard and mouse. I barely notice when, one by one, they gather close around—above, Mewsette is late, and hurries to join the group.

Then everyone turns their back on me.

They all turn their backs on me. Mimi is the last to quickly turn her head.

And keeps turning as I move around.

Well, it really was just about dinner time.

Someone Drank the Coffee, 2012

Mewsette needs a little more coffee.

Mewsette was a little perturbed that there was no coffee left in my coffee mug. She had a few sips, but while she had a bath I drank the rest. Well, it was mine!

But Cookie had taught her about sharing my coffee while I worked in the studio, as seen below from last year…
