Daily Photo: What Did Basil Say to Mariposa?

Basil reaches up to Mariposa.

There seemed to be some discussion about the dishtowel drawer. I saw Basil reaching up and Mariposa reaching down, and then I saw Mariposa’s reaction. Giuseppe, above appears impassive. Who knows? Basil is a sweet and polite cat. Perhaps her bloomers were showing as she dug into the drawer?

From today:

Bella is perfectly camouflaged, don’t you think?

This basket is on my desk so kitties have a place to nap that’s not in the middle of what I’m doing. If they choose to use it.

This Robin looks as irritated about this weather as we are.

I managed to capture this photo in really low light conditions, because it was overcast and late in the day, when I took my walk in the woods last week. The robin couldn’t have chosen a better perch, red staghorn sumac.

Sunny Sienna, 2020

We did have a sunny morning this week, and everyone grabbed a good spot while it lasted. Sienna remembers starting out in the bathroom in 2018 and while she’s usually downstairs, when the morning is bright she finds her way up to the bathroom. Here she’s toasting her back. She was so happy I had a difficult time getting a photo of her at all, let alone sitting still.

Look at those whiskers, all at attention! I love how the tips of her ears curl back a little too. She is so intent on those birds. She has practically worn a path from my lap to the window. She talks to them too.

It’s especially exciting when there is more than one bird. Here is what she was watching…

The cardinals were on a date out there. This is nice but the one below is the one I really wanted, when both cardinals fit between the muntin bars and were both looking at me, and my camera decided to focus elsewhere.

Hamlet Enjoying the Attention, 2017

Hamlet gets licks from the big ninja Giuseppe and his mentor Basil.

I was concerned for how Hamlet would react when his sister was adopted. They did spend a good bit of time together, but Hamlet also spent a good bit of time with the other cats in the house too. He really was looking for Ophelia yesterday but seemed to relax by dinner last night. By this morning he was napping with Basil and Bella in the bathroom, which they haven’t done for months, and he had a chance to play with them too, closer to his age. But then he took off on his own for a few laps around the house and some rigorous play with fleecy mice and catnip pyramid toys. He’s enjoying the attention he gets from the big guy and his fur brother, the other household fluffy.

They just look very nice as a group here.

Good morning! Welcome to a new week, full of potential. And we have some news–we’ll tell you later today! (For current readers, the news was that Hamlet’s sister Ophelia had been adopted.)

Daily Photo: Why We Couldn’t Visit the Yard Yesterday
Mimi stares at the deer in HER yard.
Mimi stares at the deer in HER yard.

Mimi watches round-eyed through the safety of the deck railing as the three deer slowly browse their way out of our yard.

I carefully check the yard before I go outside on the deck with Mimi. Likely I’ll be filling the bird feeders and Mimi has her little routine on the deck as well, scratching the old wooden stool in the corner, smelling everything and rubbing her face against select corners and edges. Only then are we ready to venture out into the yard.

That gives both of us enough time to see the deer, if they are out. I don’t want anyone to get spooked. In this case, I’d been photographing the deer, first through the basement door and then through the back door, then out on the deck. When they’d moved safely to the corner of the yard I let Mimi outside with me.

In the basement, at the washer facing away from the basement door, I felt eyes on my back. I turned around and the yearling was watching me, from across the yard and through the screen door and the window in the interior door. She, I believe, had been browsing on the compost pile just behind her. The blur is caused by photographing through that old metal screen, but it adds an interesting softness to a photo.

Her two adult companions, the sisters, were unconcerned about me, nibbling around and having a drink at the bird bath.

They all moved a little farther up the yard and I could run to my back door and get a photo of them all together.

I’ve painted the two girls before as they browsed in the brushy area between the back yards in a painting called “Safe”. I think I’ll do a few more.

Hamlet’s been doing this lately: beheading and eviscerating one of his toy mousies and leaving it in the empty food bowl. Is he leaving me a gift or giving me a menu suggestion?

And he also does this. Can you see he’s sitting up like a meerkat? Hamlet is just non-stop interesting, and I can’t wait until he relaxes a little more and I meet the rest of his personality. Yes, he does look as if he’s trying to look like a lamp base.
