Daily Photo: Fly Free

white doves
The doves at Pet Memorial Sunday.

At one point in the Pet Memorial Sunday ceremony, after we’ve heard about the moments of losing our pet and the nature of grief, lighting our candles and reciting an affirmation, we each touch the lead dove of a small flock of white doves, then watch as she is let go, then the rest of the flock. You can imagine it’s a highly emotional moment, watching the doves circle higher and higher into the sky and then disappear on their way home.

To the person who manages the little flock they are his pets, doves he’s rescued or bred over years. They love to fly, but most of the time stay very near to where they live because they are homing pigeons, and will not leave their home. But this flight for them is also freedom when they get to do what nature bred into them, to fly long distances through any circumstances, to arrive at their home.

Kind of a metaphor for what we are doing that day as well.
