Daily Photo: Foxy Mariposa

Foxy little Mariposa.

Well, sure. She certainly knows exactly how and where to pose, and now it seems she can also read!

Manipulation, 2019

Three faces of feline manipulation. Sienna, Mimi, Mariposa. Professionals all.

I love how Mariposa inserts herself into various groupings. She just knows she belongs.

Sienna is happy to have friends and just hang out with a few cats at a time.

Mimi just wants her lunch.

I don’t like to use blurry cell phone photos, but I really wanted to feature this one. Three little girls hanging out in the kitchen. We have our scuffles and hisses, but for the most part we all get along. I love to see it.

Just how important is that piece of paper for a cat to sit on? I cleared a nice big area on my desk for kitties, but Mimi sat and looked at it until I put a manila envelope there and she was right on it. Think of all the poor kitties out there who don’t have pieces of paper to sit on.

A Sunny Window, 2018

A Sunny Window
A Sunny Window

Mimi and Hamlet enjoy a morning at the big north window, full of sun now with the tree down. It’s almost like the light when I moved here that inspired paintings like A Warm Bath and the block print Kelly’s Morning Bath. Over the years I probably have at least one photo of each cat who’s lived here enjoying this window. For now it’s my eldest kitty and second youngest kitty, Mimi and Hamlet. Later it was Giuseppe and Bella, facing each other, but the sun wasn’t as strong. Memories.

Eight Black Cats and the Garbage Truck Monster, 2107

Breakfast was interrupted by the irregular appearance of the garbage truck monster. Seven black cats are huddling on the cabinet while brave Bella goes to the window. All survived.

Hamlet has napping on the bed with other cats down to a very restful science, and now it’s time to learn to play with them. Being nearer in age than others in the house, Bella and Basil have been ready to explore the house, look out windows together and even play a little.

Here, Hamlet is learning the good spots and also who is boss. Bella is on the wardrobe, Hamlet on the windowsill, making perfect silhouettes just right for black and white. Above clear and sharp, below a little softer focus.

A New Basket, 2015

Mr. Sunshine was right in it.
Mr. Sunshine was right in it.

This one’s for you, Sharon!

The basket lady was here with a new basket for the kids! She’s been enjoying all the photos of the felines in the big basket by the window and thought they could use another. Once I removed the bag of home grown sour cherries that is :). We all thank you!

And as you see above, Mr. Sunshine was right in it. Well, this as the next morning. He was right in it later in the evening but the photos were too dark, and these are cuter.

But not as cute as his mom, who only politely fills half that basket. And look at the resemblance in their faces, eyes and even the postures of their ears.

Beware, though, I may swipe it from you for one of my table displays…

We can’t forget Giuseppe in the original basket…”Am I cute too? (Oops, guess I’ve been neglecting Giuseppe if he is reduced to curling up in the pretty basket.)” This was in response to sweet Charmee in the same basket earlier that day.

So what’s taking so long with that breakfast? Mewsette, Sunshine, Basil and Bella want to know.

In the Dark, 2014

I see you.

Mewsette looks at me from her secret place. She is the only one in the house who likes the shelf at the top of the stairs, though Bean spent time up there for a while, even with Mewsette. But now this is the one place Mewsette can get away from it all, or at least her brothers.

What creature lurks in the dark?

Who is that in the dark above us all? It is Mysterious Mewsette.

Now we enjoy Mewsette’s profile because Mewsette has chosen to ignore us and contemplate deep thoughts for a while.

I Have to Use the Phone, 2013
four black cats on table
“I have to use the phone.”

“I have to use the phone,” Jelly Bean says as he steps over the boxes.

“Right,” says Mr. Sunshine, keeper of the telephone and all things electronic and mechanical.

Apparently one black cat was not enough supervision for me as they collected on my work table. I’m really glad the Modge Podge was dry on the keepsake boxes before all that black hair went floating around the room with all the bathing.

I’m not sure who Jelly Bean intended to call, or if he was just playing games with Mr. Sunshine, who can be touchy about his stuff.

Sleepy Neighborhood Watch Tortie, 2012
tortoiseshell cat
Kelly catches 40 winks or so on her shift as window monitor.

So Kelly had today’s shift as Neighborhood Watch Cat, but on a quiet Sunday on the street there’s an opportunity to catch a nap. Her eyes aren’t quite closed all the way, she could awaken at any moment, so no one need worry of an unexpected and unannounced danger, such as the squirrel running across the porch, or chipmunks taking advantage of the birdbath.

We will all be back to work tomorrow, from the first bird tweet in the trees and the first commuter parking in front of the house.

Kelly Is “In”, 2010
tortoiseshell cat on desk
Kelly is “in”.

Kelly has changed tasks from paperweight kitty on the desk to paperweight kitty in the bin.

Or perhaps she is telling me that paying some attention to her is on the top of my agenda.

The “in” bin is always a favorite nap spot. Lately, however it’s been pretty full but that doesn’t stop Kelly from piling her slender self on top and letting her long legs and tail dangle over the edges.

I am working on several organization projects in addition to regular work, artwork and design for myself, and letting my desk get fantastically cluttered until it’s time to sort through all the stuff and clear it away. It’s been fun to watch the progress, and the cats make themselves at home on top of whatever is there. Now and then they slide off with the goods when one of the piles gets too unstable, but just about any cat can drape itself over something and keep it in place.

As you can see, the downfall of my desk began quite a while ago!
