Daily Photo: Find Bella

black cat on granny afghan
Find Bella on the afghan.

Where is Bella? She’s happily sleeping on the wool afghan. Like most other kitties, she’s decided she needs to nap on it several times a day. She joined Mewsette, and eventually as many others as could fit lined up on it when folded at the foot of my bed, good company on an autumn day that turned dark and gusty. But she’s so hard to see! For Caturday Art I used the “poster edges” filter so it would posterize all the color areas, then add a fine outline to just about everything. CaturdayArt1BlogHopButton150x150_zpsbe54d2dc

Cold and Wet, 2013

Please, let me in!

Mimi begged to go outside today, so out we went when I needed to gather some herbs for today’s pot of soup and then to finally bring in my geraniums and begonias. She got a little surprise as the temperatures were steadily dropping and the rain began to fall. Some tough former street cat, as she’d been trying to convince me she was! Her little paws aren’t suited for November rain anymore, though she did hop out into the leaves and grass when she heard a bit of something rustling around out there.

Something is rustling over there!

She had gone around to the basement door, and I thought of the days when she was an outdoor kitty and came to our garden to hunt and to have a drink of clean water in the bowl I always had outside. Before she came to live with me I saw her from indoors and out looking in the screen door.

Mimi looks desperately through the screen door, but the basement door is closed.

I like weather like that now and then and look forward to a pot of soup on the stove and a warm kitchen, but Mimi seemed to have some bad memories and at one point decided she just wanted back in, though the basement door was closed. I was on the deck when she looked up at me with huge eyes and I had the sense that, just in that moment, she was afraid she might not be able to come back in. This had happened to her, more than once, before she came to me, and while she’s been pretty sassy and adventurous when we’ve been out in the yard in nice weather, things were different now. She leaped through the grass and leaves and came running up the steps, heading right for the back door and skimming inside before I even had it open. She spent the rest of the afternoon solidly on my lap. Some things are hard to let go.

All Ears 2013

A bunch of black cat ears.

Sometimes extreme closeups are fun when they are sleeping in a heap on my desk. This in particular is three different ears from three different cats, each with their characteristic white ear hairs. The photo below may clarify how it happened, sleeping with their heads together, Mewsette at the top, Bean on the left, Giuseppe at the bottom…perhaps I should be concerned about what may come from this meeting of the minds…

Mr. Sunshine, Twice as Cute 2012
black cat in mirror
Mr. Sunshine, and again.

He’s got that head tilt down to an absolute science. I have an older mirror on the bathroom door and if one of them is sitting on the end of the cabinet they are perfectly reflected. You can also see Jelly Bean being twice as cute

Work? He’s Here to See Me 2011
black cat being petted
Mimi gets attention first, and for as long as she wants it.

You need to discuss this calendar with a customer? Don’t be silly. He set this here for me to stand on so I can get my required amount of affection from him. He is here to see me. Your customer? Work? He doesn’t want to work, he would clearly rather pet me. I will stand here and receive my rightful affection for as long as I want it. I’m so fortunate that all my customers like cats, and some, like Howard whose hand you see here, are downright cat people. Mimi is right, Howard would definitely rather pet Mimi than work. And Mimi is right, she stood there on the calendar for as long as she felt she needed the attention. If we had moved her, she would have popped right back onto it. We’ve tried. It’s pointless. Mimi never ran from people, but I remember the days when she would sit across the room, wistfully watching her kittens or Namir or Cookie getting their share of pets. Now it’s all about Mimi. And Howard adopted one of Mimi’s kittens, Charlotte, the one and only calico Mimi ever produced, from Lucy’s litter.

Penguin Cat, 2011

JB keeps his white spot very clean.

Perhaps Jelly Bean is inspired by the painting of the polar bears behind him on the easel, or perhaps he just has a large white spot on his belly that he keeps very clean. He looks quite fat when he does this, and the way he holds his arms out to the side really makes me think of penguin flippers, especially with his little hind paws turn inward. He is excessively cute. But he made me promise that if I showed this photo of him where he looks fat and ugly that I’d also show a photo where he looks handsome and dignified. Here is the Bean, looking quite handsome and dignified.

Enjoying the Autumn Sunshine, 2009

Wavering silhouette.

A monochromatic photo of one of Giuseppe enjoying the autumn sunshine. The wavy glass in this old casement window casts its own shadows and the stucco wall adds texture. And another view, below, as Giuseppe turned his head to ensure even coverage on his fur. I’ve got plenty of photos and paintings of my cats in the sun, but sometimes their shadows and silhouettes are just as telling, and this time of the year the sun comes in these two back windows at incredible angles which is why you’ve seen several shadow kitties lately.

    • Hand crocheted wool blankies are the best, Georgia and Julie, especially the old blankies! But I like this collection too–I was really excited when I saw all the other photos I’d posted on this date.
