Daily Photo: Black Cats Are Beautiful

Black cats are beautiful.

Mewsette and Mr. Sunshine awaken to cuddle during a heart-shaped nap.

I could title plenty of the photos I post “Black Cats Are Beautiful”. With nearly each photo or series of photos I take, a title comes to mind even as I look at the scene, and as I decide and prepare to photograph and actually take the photographs that title may clarify, but I nearly always go with that title as the one that comes from my heart and mind in the moment.

In part, I know, this particular title was intellectually inspired by overcoming all the technical challenges of photographing two black cats cuddled together against a dark background quickly enough to capture them before they got curious and came to investigate what I was doing—changing to my 70-300mm zoom lens which has greater clarity than the other, pushing buttons and turning knobs on my camera to define all the manual settings at my best guesses, and finding something sturdy to press my camera against to keep it steady for the slow shutter speed, in this case, the decorative carved post of my poster bed. The white quilt reflecting on them helped to illuminate shadowed areas, but the mid-range highlights could be lost in blackness with a programmed shot, the delicate highlights that defined their faces lost. A flash, even a slow and gentle one, would have destroyed the subtleties, introduced too much contrast, not to mention the effect on their eyes.

But by the time I was ready to photograph the two of them had lost interest and were ready to resume their nap, and I had to call them and laugh and sing and wave my hands like a fool to get them to raise their heads again, and slap myself on the forehead to get them to look at my face.

But it was all worth it.

Who wouldn’t want to gorgeous cats like this on their bed? Why doesn’t everyone want to run out and adopt a black cat—or two?

Magic, a very beautiful cat.

Here’s a black cat for you!

Just today, a lovely and sweet black cat was rescued from someone who had posted her ad on craigslist as “Free Ugly Cat” and described her in a way that sounded like a joke. Her name is Magic and she needs some veterinary care and a foster or forever home—and if any cat deserved one, it’s Magic! As it turns out, it wasn’t the cat who was ugly but the people who had her in their garage because they didn’t like her, and for a much longer time than they originally admitted. She was apparently given to the people giving her away by an elderly woman who could no longer keep her.

Look at her sitting there calmly in her carrier. She is sweet and friendly, about ten years old, declawed, spayed and about to get an exam and necessary vaccinations.

Magic is in the Pittsburgh, PA area. If you’d like to adopt or foster Magic, please contact me! If you’d like to help with Magic’s veterinary care, housing and food, you can make a donation to the Homeless Cat Management Team or to Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue.

Photo taken by Magic’s rescuer, and thanks to him as well for always being ready to pull a cat out of a bad situation, and rescuing so many.

  • I love all types of cats, but I personally think black cats are the most elegant-looking and are all gorgeous. 🙂 I don’t understand how people could be so cruel to animals! I hope Magic finds a good and loving home that she deserves.

    • Steph, sometimes I say everyone is different where animals are concerned, and sometimes I’m not so understanding, but we do as much as we can to help black cats get the respect they deserve!

  • Absolutely gorgeous pic of your stunning black twins. I must admit I find it rather hard to photograph my feline patients. They either look away, lose interest pretty quick or simply & purposefully look away. So well done on getting this photograph. :-). Black cats are enchanting and I hope Magic finds her forever home as she deserves to be truly loved.

    • Dr. Rayya, my cats are “professionals”–they’ve been in the camera lens since they were three days old. Wake up from a nap and look at mom? No problem! Other cats are not so easy, but I think you do a great job when you’re writing about your feline patients.
