Daily Photo: Basil in Yellow
Basil chose this spot in my display to pause and pose because it best coordinates with him and matches his eyes.

From today:
Even at 11 degrees, the girls are ready to go outside. And they actually did, even when the cold air hit their little faces, but only for about two minutes on the deck.
Mariposa pauses to show off her full spread of whiskers on #whiskerwednesday. I set this up in black and white on Instagram because the photo was overexposed, but I opened the original in Photoshop and adjusted it with professional settings so you can see her amazing whiskers even better. Then I couldn’t decide if I liked it better in color or black and white, so here are both.
February 11: No, you can’t make the bed yet.
Sienna is admiring her portrait on our computer screen. Sienna would love you to know you can get a free matted print of her watercolor when you register for a free account on my website www.PortraitsOfAnimals.net. Visit my site and choose “New Member Gifts” from the menu on the left.
February 8: Jelly Bean is experiencing basket envy, because there aren’t two other empty baskets right there beside him, he wants the one where Bella is sleeping.
From the back yard and beyond.
Sparkles. Morning sun on the snow cover in my backyard. I took the photo through the screen door in my basement, which refracts the sparkles on the snow into tiny stars. Finally, some sunshine!
Oh no, now she’s out here with her two familiars!
When Mimi and Mewsette and I went outside this morning. I think these two are really over me and my camera, hiding behind that scrawny hemlock. I don’t think they’re really concerned about Mimi and Mewsette.
Good night, be careful, stay warm.

Hamlet is One of the Boys, 2020
Hamlet thinks life just couldn’t get any better. He was on the wardrobe, one of his favorite places, and Giuseppe and Basil are up there too, and they’d been washing him. If the world ended at this moment, Hamlet would feel his life was complete. Look at his paws, all curled up against his chest. He couldn’t be happier.
And he feels pretty confident too. Look at that stretch! Those big paws!

Why I Couldn’t Sit Down Today, 2019
Mariposa had been sleeping on the pillow behind my back, and Sienna on my lap. I had to get up, but no worry, it didn’t bother either of these two. They just kept on napping where they were. Then I just couldn’t move them. I admit, the blue thing is my heating pad for my back, and what kitty wouldn’t want to nap on that? Sienna is very pleased that she has a whole part of the chair to herself, and Mariposa is just too cute for words.

Jelly Bean, Pisces Rising, 2017
Looking through a window at the indoors with the outdoors reflected on the surface, and water droplets to break it up, makes it look like a collage of ideas rather than a flat image. Add in a contemplative cat and it’s mystical. The black and white image above added the title to this post, and I love Bean’s expression in the midst of objects and reflections and water, both taken the same day, seconds apart. Make sure you explore each image for all it can give you.

Packing greeting card orders with my supervisor, Mimi.
Progress! Hamlet and Ophelia have discovered the bed and the bedroom windowsill. It’s the first time in two weeks visiting out of their room they have been up off the floor. Ophelia is still pretty timid, but Hamlet is feeling pretty confident, and playful too. Patience! Great things take time, including socializing feral kittens.
And even though it’s not a cat, it’s still something we enjoy here…
Meanwhile, down in the basement…just in time for Immolc and the true beginning of spring. Time to start taking some cuttings and starting some new geraniums for summer.
Mewsette
Mewsette is watching the squirrel in the tree in front of the house, and she is a kitty who can hold very still so I can get a good clear photo when there’s plenty of light coming in from several angles. It’s actually difficult to get a good clear photo of one of their faces because they are black and they don’t tend to hold still, unless they are napping. I have plenty of napping photos. I like an awake photo now and then!

Probably the most exciting thing that happened all day. Hamlet was pleased.

Graceful Kitty, 2011
There is nothing so graceful as a feline bath, especially in morning sun. This simple curve has long been one of my favorite postures, in fact, I did a stylized sculpture of my black cat in college in this bathing posture.
I had originally added: “Someday I’ll photograph that sculpture and post it; it’s always interesting for me to see the images and motifs that have inspired me long before I began to create artwork.” Sometimes I do follow through with my plans!

Sweet Repose, Nose to Nose, 2013
Giuseppe and his mama Mimi cuddle in/on that trimmer box as I attempt to get work done in the face of their sweetness. Even the colorful little ornament seems to describe their bliss.

Basil must have thought the yellow basket was a gift for him because he owned it from the day it came into the house, which was the day I was running errands and saw it…atop someone’s trash pile. I sprayed it down and rinsed it in the basement and let it air dry, then brought it up to the magic basket spot, and Basil was immediately IN THE BASKET, looking totally cute, big, long, white whisker and all.
