Cats on a Plane

tortie cat in carrier
You can just see Mabel’s tortie face.

I flew to Dallas, TX and back on Friday to spend at least a little time with fellow cat writers for the Cat Writers’ Association Annual Communications Conference. On the way down I overheard in a conversation in the seats behind me the word “cat”—and of course I pricked up my ears at this. It turned out there was a cat in the seats right behind me—and two more cats further back in the plane!

The man behind me who was traveling with the cat named Cheetah told me his parents were moving from Pittsburgh to Texas, and while their possessions were en route they had recruited him to help them fly their three rescued cats. As we flew and I felt overwhelmed by the noise inside the jet I wondered how the cats felt, even mildly sedated as they were. Not a peep out of any of the cats.

When we landed we gathered outside our gate to make introductions and photograph cats, but we didn’t want to risk an escape so we didn’t open the carriers. Oh, well, black carriers being pretty dark they are hard to see. I guess you can vaguely see Mabel in the photo at the top—she’s a tortoiseshell kitty, their “wild child” having just been rescued and about age one. She looked quite alert in this circumstance.

Below you can see Princess, a 13-year-old orange girl, looking out the mesh in her carrier.

Princess and Mabel traveled with the parents, while Cheetah, totally indistinguishable below, traveled under my seat row. It was nice to know I was not far from a kitty!

There’s a black cat in there.

And here is the family with their cats in hand in carriers. They’d also volunteered at shelters, rescued other cats and helped care for cats living outdoors in colonies during their years in Pittsburgh. While the son was returning to his home in Ohio, Texas cats would be gaining very caring two fans.

    • Thanks for introducing yourself! Yes, “if I were a cat”, I’d be sleeping all over my desk while my human worked all night!

    • Thanks, Tamar! The kitties were under the influence, but they were still good kitties. And really nice people.

  • Thanks for sharing the story. I have seen too many ‘family moved’ signs at the shelter. It is wonderful to see a story on a family, including the cats, that have moved together to a new home. Best wishes to the family!

    • Jo, I was so excited to meet them and tell the story. We hear more often about the ones who leave their cats behind, but I’ll bet there are many who move with cats and never say anything. I hope it makes a difference to someone who thinks they can’t move with cats.
