Cats for Adoption: Sammy-Not-So-Senior

Look at that face.
Look at that face.

I won’t tell Mimi and the kids they are all “senior cats” because they are all older than seven years—in fact, Mimi is 15 and the kids are 10! But most people are surprised to find they are that old because they are all active and friendly and look quite young, and I’m sure they have a lot of years left. That’s why I use them as an example when talking about adoption of senior cats. The main objections to adopting senior cats are that they “don’t have enough time left” and they “aren’t active and playful”. * Really, we never know how much time our pets have, but I’ve lived with several who lived to be 20 and even older, and I can tell you that 15-year-old Mimi chases three-year-old Basil and Bella daily just for fun. The fear of illnesses and veterinary costs for older pets is a real issue, but a kitten’s first year is also very expensive, and a healthy diet and regular play at any age improves health. When a kitten matures you never really know if you’ll get a cuddler, a player, a social butterfly, or a loner, or a kitty who loves to lie on your lap but not play. When you meet a senior cat, what you see is basically what you get. And really, a relationship with a companion animal isn’t all about “you” and how you feel, but remember how the kitty feels and how much it needs you to make its life complete.

And right now, in April, we are about to be flooded with kittens, while senior cats who have lost their homes through no fault of their own will sit and wait, and may not ever be adopted.

Meet Sammy!

Not only is she an exceptional kitty, but her adoption fee is only $50! Read more below.

She's ready to play!
She’s ready to play!

Meet Sammy, a petite, gentle little girl who is 10 years young! Nobody told Sammy she’s a “senior”! She loves to play and swat around toy mice or any other toy she can knock around on the floor.

Sammy is very cuddly and likes to be near “her” humans. She’s chatting and talkative and will definitely let you know when she wants something! She sleeps with her foster mama and sits and watches TV with her. She’s a wonderful companion kitty!

Sammy would love to be an only cat but would also do OK with an easy-going cat who didn’t really care about interacting. She is in a foster home with other cats and as long as they stay out of her personal spacebubble, she does just fine. Sammy is being fostered with respectful older children and does okay with them.

Like all of our cats, Sammy is spayed, microchipped, dewormed, flea-treated, microchipped, tested for FIV/FeLV, and up-to-date on all vaccinations—all that for your $50 adoption fee. If you’re interested in meeting Sammy, you can apply here: http://tinyurl.com/pghcatapp

Amazon Wish Lists

The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs. Pittsburgh CAT has a number of wish lists that include foods for feeding neo-natal kittens like KMR, and other lists that include the best kitten foods, adult cat foods, food and materials for feral cats, and preferred toys and litter.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
