Cats for Adoption: How to Prepare for Kitten Season

Tarra's kitten.
Tarra’s kitten.

Oh, yes, intensely cute, and also abandoned and in need of kitten formula and a lot of nurturing  to become a healthy adoptable kitten. This little puffball looks a lot better than he did when he was picked up, covered in dirt and diarrhea, screaming his head off under a car until he was found Sunday morning. Unfortunately, his brother was found frozen a distance away, and no sign of a mother cat. No other kittens were found.

His foster said, “I offered to take him temporarily. He was covered in diarrhea so my awesome rescue partner in crime and I gave him a bath. He started looking pretty lethargic so I got him medical care at that point. The poor bugger is just learning to eat so I need to keep taking him food every hour or so and then he takes a nap. He has a heating pad, a stuffed bunny, a radio playing, and a kitty cam watching him so I think he’s pretty well set up! Here’s to hoping this little guy thrives! I named him Gunnar…meaning warrior.”

This little loud mouth is about three weeks old, too young to be weaned or living without nurturing, so he will be bottle fed now and trained to eat kitten food in the next few weeks, how to use a litterbox, how to play, how to live with other cats and how to love people enough to go off and live with someone else for the rest of his life. Getting him healthy and ultimately ready for adoption will not come cheap–vet visits, medications, kitten formula now and high-protein kitten food later, neuter, vaccinations, not to mention the foster’s time and effort. And he’s only one kitten–there are already two litters of newborns with moms in foster, and it won’t stop here. Please consider helping Pittsburgh CATcare for our foster kittens and moms through our Amazon wish lists.

A little littering.

And it’s not any easier or less expensive when there is a mom cat and siblings. These four came in over the weekend, and their mom is pretty young and having a hard time feeding them. When they are nursing, mom cats need healthy nutritious food the same as kittens do because the kittens are eating what mom is eating. So that’s food and veterinary care for five.

Two other moms with litters have also been rescued from our current cold weather, and it’s only just begun. Pittsburgh Cat relies on donations to feed our kittens and mom cats and keep them healthy until they are adopted. Here is a link to the Pittsburgh C.A.T. And thank you! You’ll no doubt be seeing these kittens up for adoption in the coming months!

How to use it:

  • Each certificate is good for $5.00 off your order of $25.00 or more.

We’ll be seeing a lot of kittens, I’m sure, and you can know you were part of helping them be rescued and find a home!

Amazon Wish Lists

The Amazon Wish List for our group’s foster kittens.

Many rescuers pay out of pocket for veterinary care and food but the costs of raising even the average litter of four healthy kittens is more than many people have, and many rescues have greater needs. Pittsburgh CAT has a number of wish lists that include foods for feeding neo-natal kittens like KMR, and other lists that include the best kitten foods, adult cat foods, food and materials for feral cats, and preferred toys and litter.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
