Cats for Adoption: Forrest, Sassy and Sidney

long-haired gray kitten
Forrest

Little fluffy baby Forrest has always been a bridesmaid, but never a bride! Insomuch as a little neutered boy kitten looking for a home can serve in that capacity, but nonetheless all other cats around him have been adopted but not sweet Forrest! You may remember the beguiling Henry Ford, rescued during the Ford City on-site clinic and who charmed everyone he saw? Forrest is Henry’s brother, and yet he languishes in foster homes and PetSmart cages. Not for lack of sweetness or purrsonality, possibly because just the right person has not yet come along.

Forrest is about 6 months old, neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations. He loves other cats but hasn’t yet been tested with dogs, though is personality is pretty gentle. Currently his is in a foster home, and is for adoption through Frankie’s Friends.

. . . . . . .

Sassy and Sidney

tabby cat
Sassy

Sassy is a classic tabby with big swirly stripes rather than the straight and orderly stripes like her brother, Sidney, who is a mackerel tabby. She and Sidney came to the foster last August from the home of an elderly couple who was feeding their mom. The humans wanted to get them placed because the woman was terminally ill and the man was having health issues too. A local shelter told them if they could catch them (thinking they would not I am guessing) that they would take them. The kittens were trapped by rescuers, including Lynn, the foster home, and then the shelter would not take them even when she offered to foster for the shelter, so she kept them. Frankie’s Friends did all the vetting with out-of-pocket expenses paid by Lynn.

The photo below shows the four kittens when they first arrived in Lynn’s care—Sidney is the tabby inside the bed, with airplane ears. Sassy and Sidney have come a long way since then! Bottom left is Shaq, in the bed is Sidney, black kitten is Shade and Sassy is in back right. Shade is still really afraid and she and Shaq have a cold that is being treated right now.

Sassy and Sidney are about 10 months old, spayed and neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations. They get along well with other cats and are up for adoption through Frankie’s Friends.

The importance of fostering

These kittens needed lots of socialization for them to be ready for a new home, and fostering is so important for the success of rescuing and saving cats’ lives. If you have space in your home to keep an extra kitty for a few weeks or a month, it can make a world of difference in their transition to a new home. These kittens were given veterinary care and will be adopted through Frankie’s Friends, and if there’s any way you can spare a bit to donate to their support of rescued cats and foster homes, every penny would go right to helping cats.

About Frankie’s Friends
Frankie's Friends Cat Rescue
Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue

Frankie’s Friends is the non-profit cat rescue set up to care for the cats left behind from the Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary rescue and founded by Dr. Becky Morrow, she of the seven-minute spay and board president of the Homeless Cat Management Team.

Tiger Ranch began as a sanctuary for homeless cats to live out their days or be adopted to forever homes, but quickly deteriorated into an unbelievable hoarding situation of neglect and disease where many cats suffered or died. About 375 cats were removed and housed in a shelter in a nearby county, countless dead cats were found in freezers and mass graves. Dr. Morrow was involved in the investigation and proceedings and cared for the cats from the day of rescue through the many months during court proceedings while their fate was being determined. After the defendant was convicted of animal cruelty the cats were finally free to be adopted and Dr. Morrow worked on getting the adoptable cats into loving homes, but when it became evident that some of the cats would never be well enough for adoption and would require life-long care, she literally found a home for them in her home town of Arnold, PA, northeast of Pittsburgh—she bought a house near her own and outfitted it for the cats, then found a veterinary technician to live there. You can see Lindsay Joyce in yesterday’s post with Phoenix.

Through Frankie’s Friends, Dr. Morrow also operates the mobile veterinary unit that provides neighborhood spay/neuter clinics all over the Pittsburgh area as well as veterinary services to other animals. She is also the one to literally pick up the pieces of cats who’ve been rescued with collars embedded in their armpits, who’ve been shot, mauled by a dog and left for dead as well as the leagues of kittens and momcats who are the victims of difficult births or nearly fatal viruses, sometimes offering the services gratis.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
