ADOPTED! Molly

siamese-point cat
Pretty Molly, looking for a home.

I had nothing to do with her adoption—it was already in progress when I posted her on Monday—but Molly went to the most perfect home for a princess like her: only kitty to be doted upon by a middle-aged man! The first report came back already, a long message telling how she’s exploring, and how unique she is, and her adopter is already in love! We know Molly is too—she took over his side of the bed, but she’s playing hard to get, now and then. “She certainly has personality! I love it!”

This is the success of rescuing and fostering by a bunch of people who care! You can read her rescue below, and Molly was kind of a difficult personality, but with the patience of understanding people she relaxed, and she also had the time for the purr-fect home to come along without waiting in a cage or having the clock countdown behind her. Thanks to everyone who had a part in Molly’s rescue and new home, and for all you do for all the cats who come your way.

Molly’s story:

You may have seen Molly before now—she lives with Kaytee Bixler.

Molly was a little “accidental” kitten of two unspayed/unneutered cats. The three were spayed and neutered in December 2013 but the person who’d had them could only keep one and took the male cat, and Molly and her mom Lucy moved around from the clinic in Tarentum to foster homes to PetSmart and back to foster. Eventually Lucy was adopted, but Molly, while stunningly beautiful, is still waiting. She can be a bit of a princess, but she just needs a good steady home of her own to settle into.

The importance of fostering

Cats like Molly, and many other adult cats who don’t fit into shelter life, are the reasons fostering is so important for the success of rescuing and saving cats’ lives. If you have space in your home to keep an extra kitty for a few weeks or a month, it can make a world of difference in their transition to a new home. Molly was adopted through Frankie’s Friends, and if there’s any way you can spare a bit to donate to their support of rescued cats and foster homes, every penny would go right to helping cats.

About Frankie’s Friends
Frankie's Friends Cat Rescue
Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue

Frankie’s Friends is the non-profit cat rescue set up to care for the cats left behind from the Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary rescue and founded by Dr. Becky Morrow, she of the seven-minute spay and board president of the Homeless Cat Management Team.

Tiger Ranch began as a sanctuary for homeless cats to live out their days or be adopted to forever homes, but quickly deteriorated into an unbelievable hoarding situation of neglect and disease where many cats suffered or died. About 375 cats were removed and housed in a shelter in a nearby county, countless dead cats were found in freezers and mass graves. Dr. Morrow was involved in the investigation and proceedings and cared for the cats from the day of rescue through the many months during court proceedings while their fate was being determined. After the defendant was convicted of animal cruelty the cats were finally free to be adopted and Dr. Morrow worked on getting the adoptable cats into loving homes, but when it became evident that some of the cats would never be well enough for adoption and would require life-long care, she literally found a home for them in her home town of Arnold, PA, northeast of Pittsburgh—she bought a house near her own and outfitted it for the cats, then found a veterinary technician to live there. You can see Lindsay Joyce in yesterday’s post with Phoenix.

Through Frankie’s Friends, Dr. Morrow also operates the mobile veterinary unit that provides neighborhood spay/neuter clinics all over the Pittsburgh area as well as veterinary services to other animals. She is also the one to literally pick up the pieces of cats who’ve been rescued with collars embedded in their armpits, who’ve been shot, mauled by a dog and left for dead as well as the leagues of kittens and momcats who are the victims of difficult births or nearly fatal viruses, sometimes offering the services gratis.

Spike is looking for a home!

Spike was the young kitty living with Karen Herman, who’d lost several limbs to a nearly fatal infection with bacterial meningitis but still loved her animals. She needed to move to accommodate her condition, but Spike was adopted by the a relative of her caregiver. One more happy ending.

South Side Lucy

An injured kitty rescued and an in need of donations

Pittsburgh Feral Cat Movement received a call about an injured and emaciated cat on the South Side last night, and through networking people and transportation had the kitty rescued and at the clinic in Tarentum in two hours. Though less than a year old and adopted from a shelter, Lucy had been missing for a couple of weeks and when found her owner refused payment for her broken jaw and ruptured eye. She’s pictured here after a few days in the clinic.

She received care and food while getting a course of antibiotics at the clinic in preparation for her surgery. Lucy came through her surgery well, and never stopped being sweet and affectionate, as you see here rubbing her face on the cage. Donations to help cover the cost of her care would be greatly appreciated. You can read about Frankie’s Friends, above, the organization caring for her now. Donations can be made via PayPal to frankiesfriendscatrescue@gmail.com. No donation is too small, even $5 will help! You can specify “South Side kitty” or “Lucy” in the notes, if there are leftover funds they will be used for other emergency situations. Please let me know you have made a donation and I will send you a gift certificate to my Etsy shop as a thanks for your generosity.

Can’t adopt? Foster! Can’t foster? Donate or volunteer.

There are so many ways you can help cats who need homes and care. You may not have room to adopt another cat, but can foster a cat or kitten for a few weeks. If not that, you can volunteer at a shelter or with a rescue, or donate. You do this because you love your cat, and by doing so you help all cats. No matter which of these actions you take, you help to save a life, and make life better for all cats.

  • Adopt one of the cats I’ve posted here, or from any shelter or rescue near you, or from Petfinder, to open up a space for another cat to be rescued and fostered.
  • Offer to foster cats or kittens for a shelter or rescue near you.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or rescue.
  • Find a group of volunteers who work with homeless cats and help them with their efforts.
  • Donate to a shelter or rescue near you.

If you can foster kittens or adults cats to help prepare them for a forever home, please run to your nearest shelter and find a cat who needs you! Anyone can help with this effort at any level, even if all you do is donate to a shelter or rescue so they can help to pay for the food or medications needed for their foster, or the spay/neuter/veterinary care during a clinic.
