We’re “Less Adoptable”?!

The Big Four at Four

You mean everyone doesn’t want a house full of five fine black kitties? We Fantastic Four certainly think we are the envy of all other households! And our Mimi mom is the best! What would our human mom do without us? We don’t understand why every home doesn’t have a black cat, or two, or more!

We also found out that kitties like our beloved little big sister Peaches, who we miss very much, would not have found a home because she was a senior kitty at age 15 if our mom hadn’t taken her in. We grew up with Peaches and we can’t begin to tell you what we learned from Peaches! Giuseppe loved her very much and took good care of her.

And Giuseppe will remind you that his lovely Canadian girlfriend, Mlle Daisy Marguerite, is diabetic as well as being black, but that doesn’t stop Giuseppe from mooning all over the house about her—or her mom from loving her and learning to give Mlle her injections twice daily.

Mimi tells her story

Mimi here! It’s “Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week” sponsored by PetFinder.com, encouraging you to consider a pet who may have special needs or characteristics that usually makes them left behind in shelters and animal adoption agencies.

I, too, remember Peaches fondly and was glad for her tutelage as my children grew, and for the adult instruction from Cookie, Kelly and Namir as well. This house was all senior kitties when I arrived as a young single mom.

While I admit my children are the most beautiful and wonderful foursome of black kitties who ever walked the earth, I also know there are plenty of other black kitties out there—I have no idea what happened to most of my 24 kittens, for instance, and if adoption statistics for black animals bear out, I don’t really want to know.

Share the Love

But hearing about deaf cats, blind cats and cats missing limbs, what’s a little black fur?! I feel lucky in the face of some of the stories my human mom tells me.

Just to prove that kitties who may not seem adoptable on the surface are all the same underneath, and there is nothing to be frightened about in a kitty who is older or blind or black or who has a treatable disease, our human mom will share stories of “less adoptable kitties who lived with her or who were adopted by friends—and they lived happily ever after, as I am and my children are doing right now.

And we’ll also introduce you to some kitties who are very  adoptable, but who may have some trait or characteristic you’re not sure about. Remember—we’re all the same beneath our fur, all capable of love and devotion.

  • I do not understand why black cats and kittens have this problem getting some one to adopt them. I have a black cat his name is Percy he just turned three years old. And while he can never replace all the cats I have had in the pass he is now the love of my life and I wouldn’t trade him for anything.

    • Brian, I think some people just don’t understand until they live with a black cat–and then like you and me they are totally sold on them! I’ll bet it works the same for black dogs and other animals. Thanks for reading!

  • I have to say, I miss the days when we were owned by two black cats — it felt like we had extra luck! Thankfully, Bandit left his protege Hawkeye behind when he crossed over.

    • Tammy, I thought Hawkeye was a black cat. A friend had a black cat named Hawkeye years ago, one of my favorite cats. I wonder if they are somehow spiritually related.

    • Hawkeye is black, Bernadette — black with silvery specks scattered throughout his fur. Bandit, his mentor, was so black that once when he was a kitten, I went searching for him in the cellar and could not find him till he yawned. I just liked having 2 black cats. And Bandit always felt like the guardian spirit of the house.

    • Thanks, Tamar–they are on a mission to make sure the world knows how wonderful black cats are. I guess I’ll let them take over this week.

We black kitties are, according to my mom,
    the prettiest and most affectionate
kitties in the world. We are also
    clever and loving. Mom sometimes
muses that all this might be because of our
history. Just because we like being with
our moms and enjoy a good garden full of
magic herbs…… oh, it is not worth
trying to explain… in England, we were
    considered good luck.

When mom and I adopted one another 11 years ago
there were so many black compatriot kitties at the
shelter. Mom wished she could have taken all of
us home with her that special day. I was the lucky one!

And now I have diabetes… mom
says not to worry. I let her give me
    those needles every morning and
    every evening. I get special
hugs and kisses after allowing mom
to give me those sharp little stabs.

    • Daisy Marguerite, you are a very special girl! Your mom is very lucky to have found you–and so is Giuseppe! I’m so glad your mom found out what was wrong, and you understand what your mom is doing. Even though you’re Giuseppe’s “older woman”, you’re still a young lady!

  • That is all so very true. We have three black cats here and they are the best but so is every one else the best. Great post.
