Trees | Paths I Have Walked

Where was I yesterday? Keeping my cats calm with chainsaws around my house and, oh, the occasional 100-year-old maple falling to the ground.

Mariposa isn’t sure she likes the new view—there’s no guardian tree between her and the street! I feel the same, but I’m ready for the change.

I had three of my trees taken down, including my beloved silver maple. These were in the sextet of trees that greeted me the first time I came to see this house, whose leaves I happily raked that first autumn in my new home, whose presence made my little house on a medium lot seem like a cottage glimpsed through an enchanted forest, as many people commented.

  • A new view, perhaps new flowers for spring…

    • Elaine, sorry it took me so long to respond, yes, I’m looking forward to flowers this spring. When I moved here I moved my entire little cottage garden from the house I’d rented, and I lost it all to the shade and the drinking habits of these trees–shallow roots and big trees sucked up all the water. I’m going to enjoy the new look.

  • We had our backyard trees trimmed back a few weeks ago, even though I was secretly hoping that they were going to chop down a couple. I’d replant hardier, less trashy trees, but still have the same seven…they are just tidier than before! Hopefully, more sunlight means more native plants, to invite the birds, butterflies, bees, and bats into the yard.
