September is Disaster Preparedness Month, Prepare for Yourself and Your Pets

The Atlantic hurricane season begins May 1 and extends through November each year. Because summer can bring wild storm systems, tornadoes and wildfires, people often relax at the end of summer thinking the worst of it is over, but some of the worst hurricanes have hit in September or later. Industrial accidents, fires and other non-weather disasters can happen at any time.

It’s always a good idea to have an emergency kit for yourself and your pets including medications, a food supply, water, and things you’d need if you had to stay without power for a while or evacuate in a hurry. My article “Emergency Preparedness for You and Your Pets” includes lists, links, information and a downloadable list of items to collect for your pet’s emergency kit. Rather than republish the article I’ve linked to the original.

Please read “Emergency Preparedness for You and Your Pets”.

Great Rescues Day Book

Each month features one of my commissioned portraits of a feline or felines and their rescue story along with a kitty quote on the left page, and on the right page the month name with enough lines for all possible dates, with standard holidays and animal-themed observances and events. Great Rescues also includes a mini cat-care book illustrated with my drawings including information on finding strays or orphaned kittens, adopting for the first time or caring for a geriatric cat, a list of household toxins and toxic plants, or helping stray and feral cats and beginning with TNR.

Each book includes also 10 sheets of my “22 Cats” decorative notepaper with a collage of all the portraits in black and white so you can make your own notes or write special notes to friends.

The portraits in this book, collected as a series, won both a Certificate of Excellence and a Muse Medallion in the 2011 Cat Writers’ Association Annual Communication Contest, as well as the 22 Cats Notepaper mentioned below.

This post has reminded me that I haven’t updated our veterinary info list since Chucky passed in November. I’ve switched vets since then! Thanks!

When I run this article for September it’s always my reminder too! Sorry about Chucky, maybe he’s come along to remind you too.
