Rescue Story: Sophie, The Housewarming Cat

Sophie enjoys her nap.
Sophie enjoys her nap.

Likely because I’m a visual thinker I have memories connected with the quality and angle of light through the year, memories that come around as regularly as the seasons. Probably the reason I’ve been sharing photos of Sophie so often in the past month is that her anniversary of rescue is November 5, one week after I moved into this house, the first day I went back to work, and conveniently found a new kitty for our new home. Like the photos of Sophie at the door I published recently, the November sun has reached the front porch and the front door for its winter visit, and I remember that first week of living here and of coming home from work to this house, and of course the Novembers that followed with naps on bed, as above. I’m a little off schedule lately, but today is close enough to share Sophie’s story again.

Most of my rescue stories are pretty dramatic and any humor one can find is usually an offbeat detail of an otherwise grim story. But every once in a while there’s a rescue that’s just plain silly. Sophie’s head was in the clouds a good bit of the time and you could tell she was either thinking lofty thoughts or possibly watching dust motes float around in the air, but when she wasn’t she was always big, soft and squeezable, wildly affectionate and suddenly wild-eyed and frightened, and just plain silly. It wasn’t a surprise to me, then, that when I wrote her rescue story, that was just plain silly too.

October 19 was my 29th anniversary of closing on my home, this home, the one I’ve shared with most of the cats who’ve spent a portion of their lives with me. I call Sophie my housewarming cat because I rescued her just a week after I’d moved everything in to this house and finally moved myself and my cats in, and though I had six cats at the time, apparently I needed just one more to make my new home complete, an odd number, perhaps, or lucky seven.
