“Redemption” Film and Presentation by Nathan Winograd in Pittsburgh July 25

Animals have long played a role in human lives and society, most often based on their use to us. Only in the mid-1800s did the idea of laws concerning humane treatment of animals begin to change that role, and with those laws people, organizations and facilities that would rescue those animals and shelter them. Today we call this “animal sheltering”, and now that shelters and rescues have learned the value of outreach in finding homes for pets and other rescued animals, and also in rescuing the animals themselves, there is likely not a person in this country who is not aware of animal shelters and the millions of animals who enter shelters each year, many who never leave.

The film Redemption, written by Nathan Winograd of the No Kill Advocacy Center and produced in partnership with Debi & Lincoln Day, No Kill Nation, and Sagacity Productions, reviews that history and our roles today in shelters.

According to the site promoting the film, “…this is the story of animal sheltering, which was born of compassion and then lost its way. It is the story of the No Kill movement, which says we can and must stop the killing. It is about heroes and villains, betrayal and redemption. And it is about a social movement as noble and just as those that have come before. But most of all, it is a story about believing in the community and trusting in the power of compassion.”

Winograd is the director of the No Kill Advocacy Center. He is a graduate of Stanford Law School, and a former criminal prosecutor as well as corporate attorney. He has written animal protection legislation at the state and national levels, has spoken nationally and internationally on animal issues and has created successful No Kill programs in both urban and rural communities. Under his leadership, Tompkins County, New York became the first No Kill community in the United States. Nathan is the author of four books, including Redemption, which won five national book awards and is the most acclaimed book on animal shelters ever written.

Winograd is also the former director of operations for the San Francisco SPCA and actually left a lucrative career as a prosecuting attorney to devote himself to helping animals, and in San Francisco, a large city shelter, and later at the shelter in Tompkins County, NY, a rural county shelter, he implemented his plan and quickly saw huge changes in both shelters, with the rates of killing pets reduced and pet adoptions.

Even though those of us who work for animal rescue and welfare all agree that shelter killing rates are too high, many of us disagree on how to fix the problem. This film offers a perspective and solutions, though many are hotly debated, possibly because of the book’s and film’s subtitle, “The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No Kill Revolution in America”, and “myth of overpopulation” is an inflammatory phrase for many of us.
