Press Release: Beaver County Humane Society, “We are full!” Issues Plea for Animal Adoptions

Beaver County Humane Society Issues Plea for Animal Adoptions and Reduces Fees for All cats 1 year of age and older

CENTER TOWNSHIP, PA – IN AN EFFORT TO FIND GOOD HOMES for an overwhelming number of orphaned cats and kittens, the Beaver County Humane Society (BCHS) is reducing its feline adoption fees for all cats one year and older from now until the end of July. This applies to approved-adopters only. All the cats are altered, microchipped, FELV/FIV tested, and vaccinated. Adult cat adoptions between the ages of 1 year to 6 years are usually $65 and cats’ seven-years and older $30. Most shelters invest approximately $300 per animal.

We currently have 162 cats and kittens in our care – a 41% jump since last June,” said Susan Salyards, Executive Director. “We are unsure why we’ve gotten so many cats and kittens this year as compared to last. The summer months are typically some of the toughest for the shelter. It’s during the summer that most kittens are born and the shelter gets more stray dogs than other seasons. As people and their pets are outside more, their pets have more chances to escape and end up at the Humane Society.”

The problem is compounded by the fact that adoptions are typically down in the summer. “With kids out of school, families head out of town for vacation. It’s not always a great time for families to adopt,” Salyards said. “The numbers for cats and kittens for June are staggering. Every summer we see a rise in the number of cats coming into our shelter. This is why the education of spay and neuter is so important.”

Educating the public on the significance of spaying and neutering cats as well as how important TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) is for feral cats in Beaver County is a priority to BCHS. This service reduces the number of unwanted or homeless cats by providing spay and neuter services at low cost through BCHS. There is a free Trap, Neuter, Return class being held at the shelter on July 7, 2018 at 2:00pm – all are welcome but registration is required.

BCHS also is reducing the number of cats and kittens coming to the shelter by limiting intake only to the boroughs and townships that we serve. “Saturday alone 25 cats and kittens were brought to the shelter. Our goal is to save lives but that is not possible when we are over capacity. If we limit our intake at this time, those decisions are not necessary because we have enough cage space. We hope that this restriction is short lived and once we are at a manageable number we will open our shelter to all communities for intake.

BCHS also is making a plea for those wishing to help as part of its foster network, which consists of residents dedicated to providing temporary homes to cats and/or kittens too young or too sick to be made available for adoption. People may sign up to be ‘finder fosters’ for us. When a cat and/or kittens in our foster care program, BCHS provides all medical care, basic necessities, if needed, and support for the foster. Or people are welcome to call us and leave their information so that they may be added to our waiting list, but it will be several weeks before we can accept them. It all depends on our adoption rate.”

“You also are saving a life when adopting one of our fabulous felines,” Ms. Salyards said. “BCHS has quite a variety of cats – making our shelter a wonderful place to find your forever friend. And what’s even better, you’re saving a life and allowing us to take in another in need. In an ongoing effort to find forever homes for adoptable animals, BCHS now partners with three local PetSmart stores in Monaca, Cranberry Township, and New Castle as well as Petco Cranberry.

“If you are unable to adopt, please consider becoming a foster, volunteer or even an advocate for our shelter by spreading the word,” Ms. Salyards remarked. “If you wish to help, please spay/neuter your animals, donate or volunteer your time. Every little bit helps. One female cat can have up to three litters per year.”
